No MIDI control in Ardour with Alesis QX61

Hi all, been toying around with this for a while and can't seem to get it to work (seems like it should be easy) so hopefully someone has run into this and has an easy answer.

Using the latest version of avlinux 32 bit.

All midi input for playing notes seems to work just fine and there are no issues with that. I have ensured that i have the midi output for the qx61 connected to the control input in jack, and that the generic midi input is enabled in ardour, and that under the protocol settings for it, that the qx61 is selected as the input.

At that point, at least from my understanding, I should be able to CTRL+middle-click, and select "operate controller now" and then twist a knob and midi learn should work. Unfortunately it doesn't. What am I missing here?
