DAW with labeled MIDI editor

Post by mendo »

Dear all,

is there any open source linux DAW that has labelled editors like here in Bitwig Studio:

1) I like that the piano roll has labels on the notes entered when zoomed in:

2) then, they have a labelled drum mode.

This is very nice to easily associate the keys / notes with the instrument loaded.
For instance, if I load a DrMr plugin in Ardour or Qtractor, I need additional information to know which instrument is connected to the notes.

3) Finally, an editor for drumkits is nice allowing to see a visual connection between the screen and a controller drumpad

How can I achieve similar things with Qtractor or ardour?

Thanks in advance for your help.

In Ardour you need to load a .midnam file for an instrument.
That's all I really know about it.

The templates are mainly under

Code: Select all

/opt/ardour/share/patchfiles/
and refer to hardware syths.

Can I also use this for software syths or external apps such as hydrogen?

I know that the avl drumkit uses a midnam file. Look up libremusicproduction.com for a nice tutorial about these drumkits and how to use them in Ardour. Qtractor plays very nice with midi / midnam too btw. You'll load these midnam files as instruments.

Hydrogen doesn't use midnam so you'll have to create those yourself. Which is a pain ;). But Hydrogen can sync with Ardour / Qtractor via jackd, so you can just use Hydrogen to edit drums.

Rosegarden uses 'device definition files' (.rgd), these are mainly used to label banks, patches and CC numbers for hardware synths but they should work for software synths too.

You can make your own too, or convert from Cakewalk device definition files (.ins) files:
