Sequencer64 question: song mode

I've looked through the manual, and I can't seem to get my head around how to use the song mode. How do I force the song mode to take precedence over the live mode? The manual seems to indicate that pressing play on the arrange page will force this. As it stands, drawing pattens into the timeline using the pen tool works but has no actual affect on what is playing.

Other than that, I've had a couple of early morning goes with it alongside Carla as the host. I wanted to get in some time composing with the mouse to build up my experience with that method of composition. It's certainly interesting.
