Two packages (plus two lib/dev packages) have popped up as "new in repository" for Debian Jessie: sndiod and sndio-tools. Information about them here:

I use some very basic MIDI, but I can't quite determine if it's useful to me or if it would do anything for me that I don't already have. I am posting about it just in case it might be interesting to anyone.

This looks like a jack like implementation for *BSD, probably working best with OSS, although the linux port seems to build with alsa.
Anyway you don't need that as long as there is no application that supports it (*if*).
In it's current state that is only intended for developers, I would say.
