Hydrogen Help Again

Post by roseuser »

I'm using Hydrogen and I'm in song mode. I've created 1 pattern in the grid at the top of the screen and, using the grid on the bottom of the screen (the Pattern Editor?) I've made a pattern which I can hear.

So then I create a 2nd pattern to the right of the 1st pattern in the grid at the top of the screen. But nothing I do opens the 2nd pattern in the bottom screen. So, how do I do this? Thanks.

If the 2nd is to the right of the 1st then it's the same pattern. Each line represents a pattern. If you want another pattern then you press the + next to Clear to create a new line/pattern.

So I'm going to end up with a heap of patterns on different rows that I have to scroll up and down? That sucks.

Thanks steevc.

I don't think I've ever ended up with heaps of patterns. Usually a few patterns plus variations. You can also have multiple patterns running at the same time, etc. It seems pretty versatile to me.

As the pattern editor is the sequencer for instruments from a given kit, the song editor is the sequencer for patterns. What you call row is actually a pattern. A square in the grid is a message telling "play this pattern (row) at this time (column)". Don't miss right-clicking on a pattern. You can copy and edit it for variations. Here is another example,

I get your point. You want to be able to have different patterns in a line like you would in a DAW / sequencer. Makes some sense. It's just not how Hydrogen works. But there's advantages and disadvantages.

You know, you can collapse the pattern editor to see only the song editor and so see much more on the screen at once…

Thanks guys for the feedback/image/info.

You know whenever I try and really get into Linux / Linux music creation, I'm often left scratching my head, thinking to myself "Why do these programmers make things harder than they have to be?"

I've written some code in the past and this is my golden rule whenever I'm designing something...

Make it easy for the user to reach their objective.

Sigh :(

Well, not every user of hydrogen has the same objective. Just the contrary.. But if you have any ideas about how to do things more easily for a range of people, let us know! Hydrogen's issue tracker is open for everyone..
