Re: Creating an asound.conf file

A fully commented .asoundrc seems a worthwhile thing to do. ... In other words, no program can take 16-bit audio change it into 24-bit or 32-bit float and make it better, nor can it take 24-bit and convert it to 16-bit and make it better. Same for changing it from 48000 to 44100 or 96000. There's al...

Re: Creating an asound.conf file

This is a Linux thing, and if anyone has different ideas please jump in ... Config files in /etc/ are system wide. The idea with this is that all users have these configs. It dates from a time when a multi-user setup was common. For your user, I think it's better to edit configs in your home folder....

Re: Creating an asound.conf file

My understanding is that .asoundrc only applies when using what I'll call 'bare ALSA' which isn't common these days. I've looked at /etc/alsa/conf.d/ and it's not something I would edit myself. I use JACK and JACK sets up its own ALSA driver, so .asoundrc and what's in /etc/alsa/conf.d/ is overridde...

Re: Problems with Bitwig performance

A Ryzen 3700x is much more powerful than an Intel 4770. You should be getting better performance. There's the software and configuration side, where you could try rtirq . There's the hardware side, where you could have a look at the BIOS. I have an MSI motherboard and in the BIOS there are one click...

Re: Problems with Bitwig performance

If I understand correctly, all was good with Bitwig on your old Intel machine? Something I would be curious about is -- do you have amd microcode installed? I'm using a Ryzen chip with Arch, and things have improved as I've updated the system. Debian is stricter about what's free and what's not than...

Re: keychanges in pop songs

It's not a twelve bar, but not all blues are twelve bars. What about Smokestack Lightnin' ? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Ri7TcukAJ8 Howlin' Wolf has a great blues voice. Or Spoonful https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s0aIjyX7vwI They're both one chord throughout. And of course Mannish Boy . That's ...

Re: Ave Maria {Gounod} chords confusion (I'm always confused))

That's good Bob. All the chords on one page. I like it.

We're nearly there; just one more thing. In Ave Maria there is one extra bar. It comes between F#dim and Abdim in the third line. It's Cmin maj7/G. Add in this bar, and that's Ave Maria.

Re: Ave Maria {Gounod} chords confusion (I'm always confused))

Is this the Nana Mouskouri recording in question?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=afc6v2bozEc

Nana Mouskouri does have a beautiful voice. That version is in Eb, and the piano arpeggios are Prelude No. 1 transposed to Eb.

Re: Ave Maria {Gounod} chords confusion (I'm always confused))

I thought the Gounod version had Bach's Prelude No.1 in C major as the backing.

Re: keychanges in pop songs

Something from the video is -- what does it sound like to you? To me A to E sounds like IV I, and the chords before are also IV I, with a temporary I.

If there's a secret it's that E blues is a different key from E major or E minor.

Re: keychanges in pop songs

Hey Jimi, where you going the wrong way round the cycle of fourths? I'm heading for E, man, that's where I can get in touch with the source. Some of my more hardcore colleagues would consider moving in fifths the wrong way. I'm more tolerant and think on fifths as the other way. If we take the brid...

Re: keychanges in pop songs

Yes, the A section in rhythm changes is based around I VI ii V. The bridge is | D7 / / / | D7 / / / | G7 / / / | G7 / / / | | C7 / / / / | C7 / / / | F7 / / / | F7 / / / | The F7 is diatonic in Bb, and the preceding chords are only to get there. The progression moves exclusively in 4ths, and starts ...

@nadir If you're familiar with jazz standards do you know the bridge from rhythm changes? How would you analyse that?

Re: What TV series/movies are you watching?

The best thing I have seen in a while is The Last Of Us . Reputedly the most expensive TV series ever made, coming in at over $100 million for nine episodes. That in itself doesn't necessarily make a project good, but you can see where the money went as every scene has a meticulously aged set, looki...
