Invitation: Be a part!

If you would like to be a part of this project to write a Creative Commons music theory book, please reply here or send me a private message. Although I would love to employ you, this will be purely voluntary. Your name will come on the list of contributing authors. That's about all.

Re: Software to write Theory book?

I think Lyx is the best option. I have made an example of use with jedit and lilypond. You can see how easy it is: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6SdfzM-lVEk And the best of it, the support that you can find in lyx documentation, and lyx user groups. One problem, one google search, that's all. Than...

My Decision

I have finally made my decision! I have thought about all your comments, and decided against using a Wiki. Thus, I will be using LyX to write the content, using Lilypond and Lilypond-book to insert the notation inside the LaTeX output. I have not yet decided where to host the files yest, whether loc...

Re: Software to write Theory book?

I have narrowed it down to two possible solutions: 1. Edit in LyX, with some sort of SVN revision management It sounds a bit crazy to me, but treating the book like a software project, hosted on something like Launchpad, may actually work. Instead of files containing code, of course, the files conta...

Re: Software to write Theory book?

So, I have had some time to think, and I have had an idea (probably ill-advised) based on editing the content in a Wiki. The content is edited in a Wiki, chapter by chapter, and then exported in some form (like XML?) to be further edited and combined in e.g. LyX. See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/He...

Re: Software to write Theory book?

Thanks for the lively discussion everyone! I'm not kidding when I say that your input is really insightful! Time for a little bit of feedback from my side: For publishable content tools like LaTeX and, sometimes, OpenOffice.org are great although the LilyPond integration can be tricky. My thoughts e...

Re: Software to write Theory book?

Does anyone know if it is possible to implement all the same LaTeX markup and classes in LyX? I will ask around, and even try it out, but if you take a look at the following page... http://lilypond.org/doc/v2.12/Documentation/user/lilypond-program/LaTeX ...you can see that it is possible to include ...

Re: Software to write Theory book?

@raboof: Thanks for the input! I understand what you're saying, and I guess that you administer/contribute to that music theory WikiBook? The thing is, I am looking at what is probably the same problem from another point of view: I would like to create a publishable result, with all sorts of aesthe...

Re: Software to write Theory book?

I have read a bit on various blogs and internet posts, and have come down to the three most feasible options at this stage: LyX with some sort of <music> class or Lilypond input, as implemented here on WikiTeX Lilypond-book (not so desirable) OpenOffice.org with the Lilypond plugin All of the above ...

Re: Software to write Theory book?

Thanks for the great input, everyone! Here are my replies: @raboof and @Pablo: I have thought a lot about using LaTeX, or even something like LyX, but if I want to get some of the local people involved, I'm a bit worried about the learning curve. That doesn't mean, however, that I will forget it imm...

Software to write Theory book?

Hi there! I know I haven't been on Linuxmusicians.com for about 6 months now, so I'm sorry, and I can't tell you enough about how good it is to be back! I have found the free / public domain / Creative Commons books on music theory to be somewhat lacking in comparison to the ones that can be bought....
