Re: 3 Steps Forward 2 Back: Progress and Frustrations with fundamental DE issues

Hi, I have the latest plasma, here you can definitely configure the desktop-number to be shown. There are two configs: Configure virtual desktops (where you can set the number of virtual desktops, for instance) and configure virtual desktop switcher (where you can configure the app that switches th...

Re: 3 Steps Forward 2 Back: Progress and Frustrations with fundamental DE issues

First time I'v gone this far with a distro! So... I'm going to blank it and start again with a bit more of an idea of what I am doing... :) be back soon! :) Best of luck! I commend your tenacity, and I have confidence that it will work out better now that you have more experience. Thank you and yes...

Re: 3 Steps Forward 2 Back: Progress and Frustrations with fundamental DE issues

Before you install anything with apt it's recommended to update the package index with sudo apt update Update, then try sudo apt install linux-lowlatency again. I did try all that and got could not be found. However I didnt try again after reading that that low latency kernel was an out of date ker...

Re: 3 Steps Forward 2 Back: Progress and Frustrations with fundamental DE issues

I don't think you should need to do that, the default-settings package should have done that as far as I remember. You can check if you type 'groups' in to a terminal. If it lists audio then you are in the group. The second point is a combination of setting the start on boot option in cadence (choo...

Re: 3 Steps Forward 2 Back: Progress and Frustrations with fundamental DE issues

I have just installed NEON to make a fresh start :) And am in the process of setting up and tuning up :) Yes, obviously  Although the point I'm trying to make is that, unless you want to actually fiddle with the Linux system (and learn things doing so, which is very good, nothing against t...

Re: 3 Steps Forward 2 Back: Progress and Frustrations with fundamental DE issues

* Jack server is not started on boot, have to do that manually atm... What are you using to have firefox (youtube for instance) and vlc/mpv and such playing audio transparently w/o having to think about it ? A jack sink for pulse audio ? If so, then as I described previously jackd will be started f...

Re: Another IT/hobby-musician type

I had a Speccy, too, and soldered +32 kB RAM together with a programmable bank switch. I bought a MIDI interface from Jellinghaus (more expensive than the Speccy) and wrote dump programs for Yamaha DX7 and Roland S10 sampler. Archiving the S10 samples on cassette tape was much cheaper than the expe...

Re: 3 Steps Forward 2 Back: Progress and Frustrations with fundamental DE issues

So the latency of Neon will sort itself out and not be an issue if the environment is set right? I've not messed with kernels as yet...? So the process would be 1) Install KDE Neon from the ISO as normal 2) Once installed then add the KXStudio Repo and install what I want/need 3) Then go with that?...

Re: Another IT/hobby-musician type

I'm similar - been an 'IT user' since my 48k Speccy MkII... (ah drifts off into warm 8-bit nostagia... :D ). And have been in a band and messing with music since I was a young teen. I had a Speccy, too, and soldered +32 kB RAM together with a programmable bank switch. I bought a MIDI interface from...

Re: 3 Steps Forward 2 Back: Progress and Frustrations with fundamental DE issues

An simple solution would be to use 'hibernate' instead of 'shutdown'. The screenshot called 'canvas3a.png' doesn't look like a system that has just been rebooted. Where did two JACK keyboards, QMidiArp and the rest of it come from? They came up on boot as I had set KDE to 'restore from last sesion'...

Re: 3 Steps Forward 2 Back: Progress and Frustrations with fundamental DE issues

[quote="sysrqer" My personal recommendation would be install kde neon and add the kxstudio repo as described here https://kx.studio/Repositories. With neon you get up to date but pretty stable KDE with a solid ubuntu LTS base. You can update and be secure with kernels and browsers but have...

Re: 3 Steps Forward 2 Back: Progress and Frustrations with fundamental DE issues

Reminds me of my early days of Windows computing, always messing with autoexe and config files! 1) If you think that using GUI apps is evolution when it comes to system configuration ... Errm well yes and no! I think there is a growing recognition these days of the increased distance between user a...

Re: 3 Steps Forward 2 Back: Progress and Frustrations with fundamental DE issues

Actually, after reading your post again I wonder if you set strict window rules to place applications on certain desktops then it might solve your taskbar issue. Perhaps, for some reason, they are just on another desktop. Rules would rule that out but certainly what you are showing is weird. When w...

Re: 3 Steps Forward 2 Back: Progress and Frustrations with fundamental DE issues

You're using Claudia right? I think you have to make the settings in there for it to be persistent. As far as I can tell Cadence follows Claudia's settings so changing something in cadence is just temporary, do it in claudia and save it as your studio. ... By the way, window rules work with activit...

Re: 3 Steps Forward 2 Back: Progress and Frustrations with fundamental DE issues

About jackd settings, there's a process starting it with what it thinks are good parameters. If you use pulseaudio for firefox, mpv, etc.. then there's also a pulse jacksink package and the result of this is a .jackrd file in the home directory. This is where jackd get started in that case. Mine co...
