Re: 20+ Channel Player
When I was studying as a sound engineer we had at school one of those machines (sorry, I don't remember which one), and it wasn't designed to mix directly to stereo, but to send EACH track separately to an external analog mixer: each channel on the mixer was setup to output to one track on the machi...

Re: calf eq
As sysrqer says, you can use a modifier while moving the knob. In its native interface it's "shift", if you use the generic interface (or the LADSPA version) it's "ctrl". In the generic interface you can also type the number. In Ardour you can use the generic interface by selecti...

Re: 20+ Channel Player
You probably want a hard disk recorder, check this page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hard_disk_recorder.
They're becoming sort-of vintage, now that using a pc is up to the task.
Maybe you can find a good deal on ebay or something like that.

Re: strange audio phenomenon
I'm no expert in virtual machines so if I'm wrong please somebody correct me, but I guess that the hosted environment (Windows, in your case) doesn't talk directly to the hardware, but relies on virtual hardware running within the host environment (Ubuntu, in your case). That is, the audio coming fr...

Re: Good article about sample rates
I know this thread is not super-fresh, but I want to add this link because it's the best article I found on this matter:
http://people.xiph.org/~xiphmont/demo/neil-young.html
BTW, it's also cited in the OP article, but I think it deserves its own post.
Cheers.

Re: Optimizing bass guitar?
Also another thought. are you using the Mic input or line input. I would use the line input instead of the mic input. you can always manually connect the inputs to your track so your only using 1 side of the input (line is stereo) so that you only get the side that has signal and the other that has...

Re: Optimizing bass guitar?
I do think that a DI can help (because your audio interface inputs are low-Z), but the problem lies elsewhere. From what I understand, the sound you get while you play is better than the one you hear while you don't, even when they're coming from the same monitors, and passing through the same audio...

Re: gentoostudio
You can ask kxstudio for build a kxstudio- overlay like pro-audio . That would be a huge waste of effort, I think. A collaboration with pro-audio would be a much saner approach. I'm in the process of giving Gentoo a try (for the second time, after many years). But I'm in no rush and I'm proceeding ...

Re: Can't export my track
You could record the mix into a stereo track in Ardour, and THEN you export the track from Ardour.
Or you could use timemachine (http://plugin.org.uk/timemachine/) to save cpu.
I suppose there must be a solution within Qtractor itself, but since I don't use it I can't be of much help with that.

Re: Building your own real-time kernel
I updated the info in the wiki with the links from this thread. I also rearranged the text to make it a bit more distro-agnostic, with the Debian and Ubuntu stuff more clearly marked. It still needs a "Building a kernel on Ubuntu" section, but since I use Debian I can't be sure if and wher...

I thought we did it already and went to the wiki to add the new info, but I couldn't find the page anymore and was too tired to take any action.

Re: Cleaning up files ardour 3 (Making Smaller) + Another?
I can't figure out how to get to a track underneath in the middle of a track though. You can right-click to get the region menu and move it on top or, even better, you can change the track layers visual mode to "stacked": http://manual.ardour.org/working-with-tracks/controlling-track-appe...
