OmniStudio Troubles
My primary recording interface is a M-Audio Delta 66 PCI card with a Omni I/O interface attached. The Omni is pretty nice, with 6 inputs and 6 outputs, 2 on-board mic preamps, 2 headphone jacks, effects sends, etc. One problem I noticed when I first got the unit (I bought it off eBay) was that the f...

Re: Finale vs. Sibelius on Linux :(
Nathan: Have you seen Canorus? It's the successor to NoteEdit (which is apparently not going to be developed any farther) and it looks like it might be pretty interesting in the end. It's at version 0.5 right now, with 0.6 due to be released after the new year and 1.0 sometime in 2009. It probably w...

Re: Promoting Free Notation Editors
It might be a waste of time advocating FOSS for the sake of advocacy, but that doesn't necessarily guarantee that status quo will continue Very true. I guess I was referring more to the situations like Nathan described, where he's advocating to a professor who's not a techie and already set in his ...

Re: Promoting Free Notation Editors
To be honest, I'm starting to think FOSS advocacy is a waste of time. Not because the software's bad, quite the contrary. I say I'm starting to think it's a waste of time (and I have done/still do it a LOT) because it seems like the only people who are willing to try it are the techies. The majority...

Re: how do you compose your songs?
Another option to finish a song is to ask someone else take take a look or to take part in the 'jam'. That's what I've done in the past. Most of the music I've written to date has been a collaborative effort. I've historically had far better success working with other people than I've had composing...

Re: how do you compose your songs?
studio32: Actually, I think you're exactly right to a degree. I've been working to educate myself on songwriting techniques and theory, that's part of the "more structured approach" I mentioned. As for music theory, I think that might be part of the problem too, but from the other directio...

Re: how do you compose your songs?
I usually start a song after noodling on the guitar or piano leads me to something I like. My problem is that I come up with pieces of things and then usually get stuck trying to figure out the rest of it. I've not found a good way of combating that problem so far. I'm going to try to take a more st...
