NEW TRACK - The internet, and its viruses.
Hello, forum world, I have created a loop-based experimental track for When Keyboards Attack. I'm playing with the idea of a song switching genres between the verse and chorus. The verse is a soft ballad-style tune, and the chorus is dubstep. You can listen for free at http://retrobanana.bandcamp.co...

Re: Instruments, sounds
You could make a cheap synthesizer if you have a bit of money, Digikey, a soldering iron, and a few hours.

Re: How to play brass section on a keyboard
Sound on Sound's article on realistic MIDI sequencing could be a bit useful if you don't mind not playing your brass part live.

Re: how do you compose your songs?
1. I either listen to music from Soundcloud or Daft Punk, or I browse Looperman (a great service, almost everything is royalty-free!). 2. I sketch out a riff in Qtractor with TAL Noisemaker or Calf Monosynth or put down a great loop that I might have found. 3. I build around it, adding drums and eff...

Re: Snackin' On Utensils
This song is a strange yet wonderful triple-dose of musique concrète with a splash of funk.
One thumb up, only because I tried to give two but I snipped the ends off of my fingers and cut my thumb a bit too short.

Re: Video Game Audio System (concept)
That's an interesting concept he had. I was thinking less that the game just sequences and layers loops, and more that the game makes incidental music, cueing appropriate loops and adding effects based on what you are doing. If you draw, say, a magic sword, the music gets a more airy, aural feel. A ...

Filter Experimentation
Would it be easy to write software that outputs a relatively slow sine sweep, which you put though a filter, then you put the output back into the program, which makes a bode plot from the audio? I know that noise and a spectrometer works too, but that isn't quite as accurate as a sine wave sweeping...

Video Game Audio System (concept)
I have an idea for video game music that might sound neat. The game is split up into two processes -- the game process (GP) and the audio process (AP). The GP can be any game that needs music. The AP is a finite state machine that dynamically plays and layers audio loops as well as runs them through...

Re: The Hut of Baba Yaga
Actually, I just fixed my problem.
JACK was not running realtime, and Pulseaudio can be MEAN!
I still have a wierd quirk that when I'm clicking inside a softsynth or Qtractor or something like that, occasionally the entire screen will go black as long as I click the mouse.

JACK with Pulseaudio
I use Ubuntu 12.10 64-bit and getting Pulseaudio to behave with JACK is pretty hard without these three tips. 1. Use pulseaudio-module-jack. This package makes JACK look like an audio device to Pulseaudio, so JACK can take control of your sound card. Just run sudo apt-get install pulseaudio-module-j...

Re: The Hut of Baba Yaga
Actually, my bug was nil--the "glitch" was just an xrun while I was recording.
I seem to get a lot of xruns. How can I reduce them?

Re: The Hut of Baba Yaga
A quick OT reply: Back in the day I saw Emerson with The Nice, anyone remember that group ? They opened for The Velvet Underground at The Grande Ballroom in Detroit, probably in the very late 60s or early 70s. Yes, KE was doing his idiotic thing with the knives driven into the keyboard, but thankfu...

Re: The Hut of Baba Yaga
When I say I recorded something or ask how someone else (in this case you) 'recorded' something, it doesn't necessarily imply the use of mics at all. The track may be entirely programmed or sequenced using synths and samples. I think its safe to say I'm not the only person who uses the word record ...
