While I agree with most of what you said this statement is the kind of attitude that has the MAFIAA lobbying for the reduction of civil rights in the name of stopping piracy.Heavy Duty wrote:their so-called "copyrights" should never be respected.

Re: Nvidia why they don't release 3D driver source
These subtle insults are remembered by heads of successful businesses, and the linux community looses credibility, every time these ridiculous code ownership issues are brought up. If the real world is just too scary, there is always some 'Occupy' movement looking for marchers. Those demanding hand...

Re: Nvidia why they don't release 3D driver source
What are you talking about? Nvidia competes against Intel and AMD on the hardware front.
What are you going to use Nvidia software with other than Nvidia hardware?

Re: Nvidia why they don't release 3D driver source
Nvidia (like many other companies) graciously provide free driver downloads whether you are running Windows, Linux or any other supported OS. We thank them with our dollars when we buy their hardware. And considering that Nvidia hardware isn't just used by freeloading Linux enthusiasts at home there...

I don't think I've run across any companies yet that charge money for their drivers. Can you name some so I can know who to avoid?slowpick wrote:You are lucky nVidia don't charge for the drivers they give freely to linux for so many years now.

Re: Nvidia why they don't release 3D driver source
That's a bizarre response. Seeing as how people have been griping for years about the driver not being open source you'd think that Nvidia wouldn't act like this is the first time somebody has mentioned it to them.

Re: Clever use of PZM-Acoustic Guitar
It didn't come across as spam to me. As a matter of fact I was hoping I would remember this for the next time I need to record acoustic.
I, for one, appreciate the post.

I used to follow @openoctave on Twitter but I've stopped because it's become less about the software.

Re: Does changing interfacing in JACK have to be so difficul
Qjackctl will allow you to have different profiles you can switch to quickly. I use it when I switch from firewire to the builtin audio on my laptop. It's just a matter of saving the profile with a unique name in the settings dialog. When you want to switch you just stop jack, right click qjackctl, ...

FWIW, I had read the criticisms of OOM in the past but I was willing to give them the benefit of the doubt. OOM looked like it was on its way to becoming a great piece of software and I was truly excited about it. However, after reading the comments in this thread, I could care less if they take the...

Re: Hi — newly switching from Mac
Personally, I'm not entirely certain that Fox News and the Heritage Foundation are the best sources to quote when searching for unbiased reporting. Their bias doesn't necessarily mean that I disregard anything they have to say (unless it's coming from Bill O'Reilly), but I would probably look for ot...

Re: Hi — newly switching from Mac
Wrt to your comments about trying out various distributions: I would suggest finding one with which you are somewhat comfortable, is decently supported, has a responsive and enthusiastic community, etc and stick with it. You'll find that it'll become easier to overcome the minor issues if you look t...

Renoise will do it, but it's not exactly free (although the demo version is very usable).

Re: Teaching An Old Dog New Tricks
Look in your /etc/hosts file and see if your laptop's hostname is an alias for the loopback interfaces (there might be an ipv4 and an ipv6 one). This was a problem in some versions of Fedora for awhile where network-manager would update /etc/hosts file. I don't know if any other distributions have t...
