Re: AV Linux MX Edition Released!
Sweet! Gonna give this a shot once my week settles down. Hi thanks! If you haven't installed yet hold off, there is a minor bug in the released 64bit ISO that potentially causes boot problems specifically with the MX Live USB Maker, it doesn't affect everyone and anyone who has installed successful...

Re: Man with a Clan
This track sounds great, really fun! I'm ready to paint myself blue and don the tartan (I've got a good chunk of scotch somewhere in my british mutt DNA). Don't feel bad about compositing the tracks, it's pretty standard practice, especially in the day of the DAW. Even in the tape days, vocals and s...

Re: the Dominant-7 chord in major/minor keys
Ok, so in Cadd9 we add the 9th to the C major triad, so far I'm still here. An M7 is the addition of the 7th note to the major triad. Both involve the additon of one other note to the major triad, so why the placarding as if they were on different plants? Why not just CM7 and CM9? A CM9 includes th...

Re: Essay
I like to preface my feedback by saying, this is just what I'd do if it were my track, there's not necessarily a right or wrong here: - First, I think the basic composition is good. Nice piano melody, nice harmonies. - The piano doesn't sound idiomatic to me. That's not a mortal sin, but in my mind ...

Re: All
Ah, something out of the 4/4 norm. It's real fun to listen to. I enjoyed that composition a lot. It's effortless happiness, always pushed - or skipped - by the 5/4 (or 10/8) rhythm and all held together by the way the instruments and vocals interact. Thanks for sharing and spreading a proggy attitu...

Re: All
Thanks all! I need a break from tweaking this song, but maybe it's that the drums are considerably wetter than the rest of the tracks. Could also be some latency from some of the processing. Or...maybe I'm rushing on bass. I went back and forth on the backup vocals for a long time. They fill up a lo...

Re: New Hardware - Need some perspective
IIRC, there are some tweaks that you can do if you have an NVidia card and use the proprietary driver. (Disable vsync maybe? It's in the arch wiki, I think). I have an Nvidia on mine, and after comparing Nouveau to the proprietary driver, I went with proprietary (sorry RMS, I sold my freedom for a f...

Re: All
Ah yes, drums are my achilles heel. It's a stack of cajon, darbuka, and talking drum. I try not to over-edit them, but they are a little loose at points. I also obsess over making the kick aspect of the cajon really thump, often to the detriment of the snare aspect. Still working out a usable arrang...

Re: New Hardware - Need some perspective
As I recently discovered as well, newer hardware doesn't always equal fewer XRUNs or lower latency. It took me a LOT of experimentation to get my most recent system sorted, and it turned out it was the power supply of all things (my system is a laptop). A better PSU stopped most of the XRUNs, but I ...

Re: Escape from Mixing Hell
. Then go listen to it again in the various places and think "what if my best buddy released this... what would i think of it if this was the first time I heard it?".. You may find you're a little less hard on yourself.. I wish I could get that perspective on my music; because I suspect i...

Re: Escape from Mixing Hell
It's the same as the micro pauses referred to by mixing/mastering engineer Michael White (Whitney Houston, Jagger, Bowie, David Byrne, etc...) that ocurred years ago in recording studios when tapes had to be rewound. A few minutes of pause. White finds that today audio engineers do not have those p...

Re: Escape from Mixing Hell
One thing I have learned is that time is invaluable. Leave the song and don't listen to it at all for at least a week, perhaps even a month. When you listen to it again you will hear what is wrong. Write down what needs changing and make those changes only. Repeat. When you go back to make adjustme...

The latest recording from my little studio, and the first one I've finished on my rebuilt AV Linux system and Ardour 6.3. Got a little more power on this system, so I was able to spend more time and DSP on the sounds.
