I often use "Rubber Band Stereo Pitch Shifter" hosted in Carla. I think that it does what is expected : change the pitch of what is heard, in real time, and can be accurately adjusted in octaves, semitones and cents. This still requires manual setup, installing jack, making conections etc...

Did some testing with Airwave and Ardour / Qtractor with various synths. Maybe it's my wine version (wine-rt 1.8 ) but I mainly got crashes, no matter what plugin. If I adjust a parameter while playing, something hangs, resulting in a loud hanging tone. Both qtractor and ardour are unresponsive and ...

There's also airwave wine vst bridge. Works great in Qtractor, though not in Ardour.

In Ardour I use Carla to load Windows vst plugin.

Reaper keeps working after 60 days, fully functional. There's only a nag screen with a timer.

fluidsynth

qsynth is a nice stand alone frontend

for use in ardour you can use Calf Fluidsynth (install calf-plugins)
The plugin needs to load a soundfont
Install fluid-soundfont-gm (and fluid-soundfont-gs for some extra sounds)
Soundfonts are installed in /usr/share/sounds/sf2/
