Re: Focusrite Scarlett 2i4 dead silent in Debian (no PA)

Hi, it's probably a good idea to test with windows, just to make sure the card works at all. I have taken a look at pictures. There is the knob "input - playback". This must be turned to "playback" to hear something from the computer. Also, you could put something into the input ...

Re: Focusrite Scarlett 2i4 dead silent in Debian (no PA)

First of all, I'd plug out the h2n. Multiple cards is a bad idea: http://jackaudio.org/faq/multiple_devices.html (though possible, of course). If the card does not expose any sliders to alsa, it's all in hardware. Have you pressed mute somewhere? Happened to me a thousand times, that's why I am aski...

Re: How parallelised is audio software?

Have a look at the qtractor-docs: https://qtractor.sourceforge.io/doc/Manual%20-%204%20Qtractor--An%20Overview.html Qtractor is a fairly massive multi-threaded application. For instance, each audio clip has a dedicated disk I/O executive thread, which synchronizes with the master engine, and to the ...

Re: rate my xruns: tuning assistance?

For xruncounter, single core cpu speed is what's counting. For real world audio-processing this is not true. To get the most cycles out of xruncounter, you should turn off all cores but one and then set the frequency to the highest possible turbo-boost-frequency. As only one core is running it is hi...

Re: rate my xruns: tuning assistance?

Hi, 144 bit is not really a small buffersize. If you want to play funky guitars I'd aim for less. 96 bit would be good, 48 bit would be really good. 144 bit is still ok, depends on what kind of virtual instruments you are playing. Still perfect for organ, synth and strings. As I said before: Disable...

Re: Worse performance when power supply plugged in!

Hi Jack, I had answered this in the other thread (KDE for music stuff). Of course a modern cpu cannot permanently run on the highest turbo-boost frequency. So I have made a test with prime95 do find out, what the highest frequency is that my cpu can run when on 100% multithreaded use. That is 1.8 gH...

Re: rate my xruns: tuning assistance?

Hi, take a look at this thread: https://linuxmusicians.com/viewtopic.php?f=27&t=19858 Even though I started it with KDE-Tuning in mind, it ended in a general tuning thread with a focus on modern notebook-processors. This is probably where your problems come from, too. If you take a look at the x...

Re: Issues with recording with audacity + rakarak!!

Hi, in Order to help you you will have to explain much more exactly what you are doing. I am not using rakarak, but I assume that it is a standalone jack-aware software. If so, you can set audacity to jack as host and select rakarak as record-source. Then you can record what you are playing, audacit...

Re: Public Money, Public Code

Schools in Germany are spending substantial amounts of money for hard- and software to make students "fit for the digital world". Most schools in my area go for IPads - can you believe that? Schools and teachers are willingly helping Apple to hook young people to their products. Open sourc...

Re: how to compile xruncounter if you're a total novice?

You need to link against the jack-libs. The command for that given in another thread is: gcc -Wall xruncounter.c -lm `pkg-config --cflags --libs jack` -o xruncounter For arch, there is a build-script in aur. Maybe you need to install jack development files, it depends on your distro. If you get xrun...

Re: Use KDE for audio stuff?

Hm, also if I start that script (with value 10, for instance, as I said), the cpupower frequency-set does no longer work. Seems to be quite a difficult matter, but important! I'll have a look at your link later, thank you!

Re: Use KDE for audio stuff?

I've tried it. It works, but (big but): When run with default value, not only the cpus don't sleep anymore, but cpu clock goes up to max as well. Within seconds (about 10) cpu temp went up by 20 degrees on my machine. The kernel parameters I showed earlier do not affect cpu speed (this might be beca...

Re: Use KDE for audio stuff?

Interesting. Looks easier than using kernel parameters. Are there any disadvantages when using the 0us default?

Re: New guy here and already struggling with Jack!

Short addition: You need a jack-aware application to play back your mp3. I usually use audacity for that, there might be others.
