Re: make stereo from 2 cheap USB sound cards each with mono in

All I can say is that you don't need a reboot for .asoundrc changes take effect, only a restart of those programs that use the ALSA api, e.g. jackd and probably pulseaudio.

Re: Anecdote for those who say that you can't make good music with free software

This shows once more how important good presets are.

Many people are willing to try Open Source software but if they don't get some good results within minutes then they are disappointed.

Yoshimi and Zynaddsubfx do it right. Lots of good sounds out of the box.

Re: make stereo from 2 cheap USB sound cards each with mono in

I've done some searching on this and can only find feint promise of solutions with complexity which is beyond me. I have Ubuntu 14.04 and have had a little success with PulseAudio and QJackctl playing together OK together. Before I go into more detail could someone please tell me if I'm able to use...

Re: Your favourite Linux DAW's in 2019?

Rosegarden is a good program, but a bit old-fashioned. It's also lacking on the audio side. It has audio tracks and can load LADSPA and DSSI plugins. It has subgroups. Though it has no effect sends you can record/arrange/mix audio, too. I used Rosegarden for some songs until I discovered Qtractor. ...

Re: Your favourite Linux DAW's in 2019?

What midi editing features would make Ardour better for your workflow? Honestly, Ardour has everything I "need." Some of the way it handles editing is genius, and in other ways it's frustrating (but that's just something that comes with practice). If I had one "want" it's not MI...

Re: Unknown driver "alsa": Jack/Alsa suddenly not playing nice

Simply do a

Code: Select all

jackd --help
on the command line. It should list "alsa" under "Available backends:".

Re: Qsampler as a LV2 plugin gui

Rui, I have a question about using Qsampler as an LV2 plugin instance gui. I load an LV2 instance in a track as a plugin. I can open Qsampler and it will automatically detect the plugin instance, with all the toys to add, edit and remove gig instruments. But i can only do this for the first instanc...

Re: How to setup default outputs for Jack?

I had the same problem. I wanted to detach connections to system:out and make connections to some instances of jack_thru or jack_mixer. The solution I use is jack_plumbing (or jack-plumbing). It has to be permanently active and can make and break connections based on a rules file with regular expre...

Re: Unknown driver "alsa": Jack/Alsa suddenly not playing nice

Hm, there is some strange Voodoo happening on your machine. The "unknown driver" message could be misleading since error messages don't always name the root cause.

- Is there a ~/.jackdrc leftover?
- Is pulseaudio grabbing the card?
- does "aplay -l" list the card

Re: The best Linux DAW's in 2019?

Qtractor.

It wins (for me) against …

Rosegarden: Qtractor can load LV2 and has a more flexible audio routing
Ardour, Mixbus: Qtractor has a better MIDI editor in separate windows
Bitwig: Qtractor's available source code (I use Linux because I don't trust obscureware without source code)

Re: Unknown driver "alsa": Jack/Alsa suddenly not playing nice

I'd say your jackd is broken.

I'd reinstall the jackd package.
