All I can say is that you don't need a reboot for .asoundrc changes take effect, only a restart of those programs that use the ALSA api, e.g. jackd and probably pulseaudio.

This shows once more how important good presets are.

Many people are willing to try Open Source software but if they don't get some good results within minutes then they are disappointed.

Yoshimi and Zynaddsubfx do it right. Lots of good sounds out of the box.

Rosegarden is a good program, but a bit old-fashioned. It's also lacking on the audio side. It has audio tracks and can load LADSPA and DSSI plugins. It has subgroups. Hm, there is some strange Voodoo happening on your machine. The "unknown driver" message could be misleading since error messages don't always name the root cause.
