Re: 8-bit Treats from Tracktion

Fantastic news! These could well the the softsynths I've waited 2 decades for! :) I've just given them a quick go with the latest REAPER dev build under Ubuntu 17.10 x64. REAPER can load them but all the text is missing in the UIs apart from the name of the synth. Also, I'm a bit concerned that the ...

Re: shufti - the best image viewer

These days I only really use 2 media consumption apps under Linux - shufti for images and mpv for everything else.

I'd like to hear what peoples fave image viewing apps are and why?

shufti - the best image viewer

shufti is a lightweight, PyQt-based image viewer that non-destructively saves and restores the zoom level, rotation, window size, desktop location and viewing area on a per-image/file location basis. It is the only image viewer that works how I believe all image viewers should've always worked ie in...

Re: Ubuntu vs opensuse for a regular user in 2017

Suse Studio and OBS are two of the best distro services out there. I really like the calamares installer as used by the Suse Studio builds. I've ended up installing the Ubuntu MATE 17.10 beta and its working great so far, which is a nice surprise as the last couple of releases of UM have been junk f...

Re: Ubuntu vs opensuse for a regular user in 2017

I'm back, after having tested the openSUSE waters IMO: I think its definitely worth checking out openSUSE to see if it works for you. In my specific use case, opensuse doesn't cut it because I was unable to get video thumbnail previews to work in any of the GTK filemanagers - mainly Thunar but also ...

Re: Ubuntu vs opensuse for a regular user in 2017

I'm going to be trying (the MATE and maybe the Lxqt LEAP versions of) GeckoLinux first

https://geckolinux.github.io/

Its got a number of advantages over the official opensuse installers, including a choice of desktop without having to download them all in one 4.7GB ISO.

Re: Sing, beastie, sing!

OpenZFS will do just fine. I've heard that about 50% of it current codebase is from after when Oracle closed Solaris again. If I like opensuse more than Arch, Debian and Ubuntu, I'll be looking into how to install it to a ZFS root partition. Even if I have no luck with that, I'm sure I'll stil be ab...

Re: Sing, beastie, sing!

I've spent the last 5/6 months using TrueOS as my primary OS but tomorrow, when I get broadband again, I will be switching back to Linux as my main OS. I think TrueOS is the most interesting and promising non-Linux based open source OS. I'm equally fascinated by Redox and Haiku but they are more ent...

Re: Ubuntu vs opensuse for a regular user in 2017

One of the main advantages of ZFS is the scrub feature which checks your files match their checksums and so this helps fight bitrot. BTRFSs scrub is offline only so doesn't seem like much use to me.

Re: Ubuntu vs opensuse for a regular user in 2017

I've decided its still best to avoid BTRFS. Here's the official shortlist of reasons its shit: https://btrfs.wiki.kernel.org/index.php/Gotchas https://btrfs.wiki.kernel.org/index.php/Gotchas#Fragmentation RAID 5 and 6 are totally fubar and people are reporting hugely slow fs ops with as few as 8 sna...

Re: Ubuntu vs opensuse for a regular user in 2017

I'd like to hear from any Leap users who have tried upgrading in-place from at least one Leap release to another. How did it go?

Rui:

Do you use an RT kernel? Do you use BTRFS too?

Re: Ubuntu vs opensuse for a regular user in 2017

Thanks to everyone who has given feedback on suse and BTRFS so far. I've never really tried BTRFS as I don't trust it and I've not been using suse for about 7/8 years now, which is the only place most are exposed to it. I like the idea of a legally Linux-compat alternative to ZFS but the only people...

Re: Ubuntu vs opensuse for a regular user in 2017

I think the suse updater lets you roll back from failed system upgrades if you're using BTRFS so it may be worth sticking with it just for that, if it works? Anyone tried it? That would be another advantage of suse over buntu. If your upgrade succeeds you should be able to remove the old snapshot an...

Re: Ubuntu vs opensuse for a regular user in 2017

Hi GPS Yes, I totally forgot to mention YAST. It covers stuff that the KDE/GNOME/MATE etc control centre things don't so that it a definite +1 for less experienced Linux users. I'd also be interested to hear peoples experiences with updating between versions of Leap. Anyone got any comments on BTRFS...

Re: Ubuntu vs opensuse for a regular user in 2017

Without having downloaded any suse release, I wish the official images were more like 1GB in size rather than 4.7GB. WTF is on there? I don't want to do the netinstall but I don't want 4.7GB of stuff either. There are unofficial installers that are just under 1GB with KDE or GNOME - I wish the offic...
