You might want to take a look at sequencer64 https://github.com/ahlstromcj/sequencer64
AFAIK as long as the hardware and the software use MIDI transport controls it should be fine.
I don't know if there's JACK transport and MIDI transport work in tandem, have never tried it.

Just for the fun, I tried the tutorial and got really close until I saw that the synth used is a polyphonic one so TAL Noisemaker is out as it is a monosynth (even if you can go up to 6 voices, it won't be enough for the second line). From the screenshots of the synth used in the article, you need a basic synth like TAL noisemaker.
