Odd. Without Jack running, I can start Audacity and press 'Play' and the speakers do a little 'fart' sound.

If I then run Jack, and do the same, the 'fart' sound doesn't happen.

I'm not sure. Which sound card do you have? Is it an Envy card of any kind (M-Audio?)
