I was able to resolve this issue by installing the fonts-wine package. Audition 3 now opens and runs perfectly via WINE.

Thank you for the response. The Carla bridge works perfectly! That is a start. Unfortunately the i386 build of Audacity will not install on Ubuntu 18.04. I guess it is what it is.... If you ever think of a way to bridge 32 bit plugins in it (Audacity) let me know.

The issue ended up being caused by a lack of available space in the root partition. Deleting a lot of very old kernel images took care of everything.
