Re: Fave Linux DAW poll v2
I voted for QTractor... but I really love Traverso's UI. Unfortunately those two are buggy and buggier, so I end up using Audacity and Hydrogen more than anything... but damn are they clunky. I would consider Ardour3 if the builtin sequencer were usable and it were debugged and packaged up in the di...

Re: Integrating a note editor inside a recorder/sequencer
There's quite a mismatch between MIDI and notation... Notation is a shorthand, with details left for the performer's interpretation... MIDI needs some tweaking to get the right timing, volume, timbre, etc for each note... Notation needs visual tweaking... and there's no standardized file format capa...

Re: Integrating a note editor inside a recorder/sequencer
Everything except midi keyboard input is slow. You are then interested in the most flexible one-tool solution that does not require the midi instrument, and that is the cursor and the number keys, which allow to enter, choose and edit. Using letter keys as note names is really stupid. You block mos...

Re: Integrating a note editor inside a recorder/sequencer
Speaking for myself, I would never be able to do such things because I don't know enough about music theory. I have plans to do my own sequencer someday, but it will be something basic (just a quick way to do drum beats, patterns, and sequences). I believe that for such thing to exist we first need...

Re: favorite midi sequencer?
+1 for Qtractor, now that I've had a few weeks to play with a decent interface and keyboard. I like being able to record audio and midi with the same program. Pattern-based sequencers like Seq24 and Hydrogen are too limiting for me, anyway. I usually don't want metronomic tempo, for one thing... I d...

Re: Musician's journal / logbook?
I use paper for notes... but if you want to use LilyPond, just make one big file per month (or something like that).
The ABC format makes it easier to interleave text and music, but I think there's a way to do it in Lilypond.

Re: favorite midi sequencer?
I'm liking Seq24 and maybe Qtractor, with synth sounds from Aeolus, Yoshimi, etc. Bear in mind, I only seriously got into this stuff last week, although I've messed with it here and there, and I had fun with ScreamTracker etc back in the 1990s under DOS. I like the modular JACK/Unix-y approach thoug...
