Re: The worst system tuning tips - collect them

I've never gotten consistent results (minimal / no x-runs) below 128|3 (8 ms latency) on my now-six-year-old studio machine, for any recording scenario where I need to play along with anything (even a click track): It's been similar for me with similarly aged PC hardware. I'm now in the process of ...

Re: The worst system tuning tips - collect them

These people are practically spreading disinformation, pretending like this is some kind of expected result with their top tier hardware and l33t skills & sheeeyit. If you have evidence that any real world system set below 128|2 is going to handle a realistic musician workload without bleeding a...

Re: Is Linuxsampler deprecated?

It was a bit tricky to compile, for some reason the tarred up source for gigedit wouldn't compile on my system and I had to redo it all and use the svn versions. There appears to be a new tool called gigcreator but I couldn't get that to compile either as it throws wxwidget and probably some other e...

If you haven't terminated zeitgeist and purged it from your system with extreme prejudice, that's another parasite to get rid of.

Re: Issues to pay attention to when tuning your Linux audio PC

I've just reminded myself of another issue on Ubuntu & Mint, perhaps some other distros with Gnome, this is known as "tracker-miner-fs-3" (if it's tracker version 3, there are older versions as well.) This can be a resource hog and possible cause of xruns, who needs this nonsense..... ...

Re: The worst system tuning tips - collect them

Myth #5 - "My system is set to 16|2|48, it's stable and doesn't xrun." Variants on this one have been around for ages. But what I've never ever seen any of these claimants come up with is video & audio evidence of them running Kontakt, Diva & Guitarix and recording on Reaper or Ar...

Re: The worst system tuning tips - collect them

Yes I didn't hang around with the stock kernels and have the latest and greatest kernel on it and it does seem to work better and most of the previous problems appear to be sorted out now. But it took ages to get there.... so many issues. Like you said, one thinks one kind of understand Linux audio ...

Re: The worst system tuning tips - collect them

The CPUs can handle the workload but there are so many other factors messing with one's system that it's still been a nightmare (at least for me, on one especially new laptop) to get things working well. There are so many evolutions, updates and other factors involved. The documentation cannot and d...

1) MYTH #1 - Install Liquorix kernel for audio production.
never heard or saw about any one using it-
why should one?
standard kernel is fast enough for lowest latencies.

Re: The worst system tuning tips - collect them

Here's to hoping! And hoping that the general soundsystem gets tuned better out of the box. Then again, what would I have left to complain about if it all "just worked". I'd have to give up on Linux and just admit I should have bought a Mac. Half the fun is in getting it all working, again...

Re: Issues to pay attention to when tuning your Linux audio PC

Could you please elaborate on this parameter? Where is that set?

  • You may also want to maximize the PCI latency timer of the PCI sound card and raise the latency timer of all other PCI peripherals (default is 64).

Re: Issues to pay attention to when tuning your Linux audio PC

Alls I cans tells you is that real life testing and heartache - under asbak studios conditions - have once again confirmed to muh-self that the generic kernel ain't cutting the mustard on Ubuntu flavoured distros, compared to the alternatives. YMMV. It's been 20 years and they still haven't gotten i...

Re: How hard is life without PulseAudio?

I've moved away from pulse now on reinstalled systems, replacing it with pipewire. I've retained Native Jack for when I need it. In cases where I need a little bit extra I wrote a dialog script that switches from Pipewire to Jack, or back. Click click done. Click click undone. Multimedia stuffs work...
