ive done it before with 3-12 and up with poor results, mind you those kernels are horroble on my machiens either resulting in complete system locks or just buggy.

what kernel are you using in mint compared to ubuntu 15.04? I would try running an earlier kernel if thats even possible. ive found some buggy behaviour with newer kernels on older hardware, ranging from just plain not working on my desktop computer and on my laptop wifi drops out among other things...
