For my bass sound I use Guitarix. I start from the ground off, no amp / tubes and fxs, and then tweak around with the bass-enhancer until I have a decent sound, then I add some effects if needed, but most of the time this is sufficient.

I liked the "older" design and the new design is good also.

I'm no expert, but from what I've read Tascam doesn't work on Linux.
Try searching the forum and you will find some threads discussing Tascam products.
