For me it is hands down the Mixbus EQ. Both the built in channel strip eq and the xt eq plugin are superb quality. I never fail getting a fantastic sound with them alone.
For carving out super precise EQ I would use linuxdsp EQ, but I don't have it Instead the Calf 12band has to suffice.

Programs like Session Drummer load the sfz files in the respective position. I'm still waiting for a Linux equivalent.

Well of course I wouldn't use the sound raw. I process my snares with compression and eq. A simple notch filter will get me where I want to be. And I get full control over the sound. The kind of music I write and play entails getting as real a sound as possible. Of course you would do things differe...

This is a snare that I found on freesound.org and hacked up an sfz for.
I like it because it plays well on an electronic set.
