Re: I've recently made a decision...
Unfortuantely, Linux developers seem to always write for the latest version. In Ubuntu, for instance, the idea of a "Long-term-support" version is a joke if one ever wants to run a new progam on it. The next version will have introduced incompatibilities, and it is that version that will ...

Re: which usb audio interface?
wolftune, just to confirm, is the USB audio interface you are using and recommending for Linux the Alesis iO2 EXPRESS or the Alesis iO|2 ? this: http://www.alesis.com/io2 or this: http://www.alesis.com/io2express I'm just asking for clarification and future reference (I might need one for a laptop),...

Re: I've recently made a decision...
Makes sense, Linux doesn't have to be constantly updated like Windows anyway (practical risks are much smaller and much more theoretical anyway) and if the install suits your needs as it is and even more so if it will be detached from the internet then there is absolutely no reason to keep updating ...

Re: I Love You, I Know
I really like the third one, "Far way", it has such a light happy vibe (despite the melancholic lyrics).

Re: ALSA MIDI programming with Perl
Hmm, given the lack of replies I guess there aren't many (Perl) programmers around here. Ok, I just did the following mini program that sends a sysex dump request to a Yamaha RM50 rhythm sound module and then receives the sysex dump in return. The program is still very basic, you need to adapt the m...

Re: Is the M-Audio Audiophile 2496 the right choice for me?
Jeff I agree with you, but the M-Audio cards are only an option for desktop PCs and I think quite a few of those people choosing USB cards use them with laptops. It's kinda hard to fit a PCI card in a laptop...

Thanks, that looks already much better but there are still many subforums missing. At least the following sub forums are missing as they all had posts in the last 7 days that don't show up in the recent posts search: New Linux Music News Computer Related Hardware Your Studio & Gear HOW TOs, Tips...

Recent posts search shortcut
I'm missing a way to just display all threads that had posts in the last 24h or 48h or 7 days. None of "View unanswered posts", "View unread posts", "View new posts", "View active topics" shortcuts that are present on the main page seem to be satisfactory to t...

ALSA MIDI programming with Perl
I just discovered there is a Perl module that gives access to the ALSA MIDI functionality from within Perl: MIDI::ALSA http://search.cpan.org/~pjb/MIDI-ALSA/ALSA.pm Since Perl is the only programming language (apart from bash scripting) that I know quite well, I'm rather pleased about this Perl modu...

Re: Is the M-Audio Audiophile 2496 the right choice for me?
Jeff, thanks for the tips, much appreciated. I have now connected the master output of my desktop mixer to the two analog inputs and the two analog outputs of the card to two inputs on the mixer and both recording and playback with Audacity works fine (tested at 44.1 and 48KHz, 16 and 24 bit). The M...

Re: Is the M-Audio Audiophile 2496 the right choice for me?
I got my Audiophile 2496 card today, will install it over the weekend and see how it goes. :) Here were I am these cards show up very rarely second-hand (and buying them on ebay from abroad is not worth it due to high shipping costs) so my only choice was brand new and the 1010LT was way over my bud...

Re: Is the M-Audio Audiophile 2496 the right choice for me?
Thanks for your detailed reply. My mobo uses the AMD 770 + SB700 chipset which I believe supports native PCI. In any case (correct me if I'm wrong) I don't think latency matters much in my case, as I will only use the PC as a hard disk recorder of the final mix output from the desktop mixer, but I m...

patch editors: what's available for Linux
The ones I know of are: Jsynthlib (written in Java) supposed to work in Linux and with support for many synths, but I haven't managed to get it working yet. Also the project looks mostly abandoned. http://sourceforge.net/projects/jsynthlib/ fb01editor : patch editor for the classic Yamaha FB-01 FM S...

Is the M-Audio Audiophile 2496 the right choice for me?
I have a rack with a few hardware synths that feed into a 10 channel desktop mixer. I use a Linux sequencer (currently Rosegarden) to control and play the synths via MIDI. So far so good, no PC audio hardware is involved as I prefer the 'stability' of hardware synths rather than their software equiv...
