Re: Let's talk notation, hacker style!

One nice thing about tablature is that it is unambiguous. Yes and no. Yes: in theory that really works well. No: after I got a bit experienced I found that when I played things as in the tabs, especially chords, they would not sound quite the same as in the recording of the song the sheet was suppo...

Re: Let's talk notation, hacker style!

Does tablature count? I can learn a song from guitar tablature 100x faster than from standard notation, because tablature mimics the way I think about how the music is played. I'd be very careful with tablature, as it has very severe limitations. The first one I can think of is that it is very hard...

Re: HOWTO: Quick Frequency Response Measurements Using JAPA and Faust

Sorry guys, I did not follow the forums too much in the last few months... Maybe another thing: Boosting frequencies is not recommended and does not work in some cases. So, I like the flexibility of EQ filters. Do you mean using an Impulse Response to boost low frequency? Detailed low frequency filt...

Re: xruns(this discussion is not for smart ass remarks, it's to help each other)

It happened to me in the past to have xruns while recording, and not being able to hear them in the recorded track. The opposite also happened to me: they were clearly audible in the track. Finally, it also happened I could not notice any click in the recorded track at first, only to hear them when ...

Re: High sample rate drum machine options?

Thanks. This was mostly stuff I'm familiar with already (I'm a physicist); Ha! Me too! You will maybe find this stuff on my blog interesting. Well, this was interesting! I was trying to figure out how best to produce a recording of what I'm hearing -- right now I don't have monitor speakers install...

Re: High sample rate drum machine options?

I'm guessing this is an issue with the sample rates of the instrument samples that the kits are built on: they were probably sampled at 44.1k or 48k, and at 96k I'm guessing there's some interpolation issues or something. I would find it very odd if resampling was lowering the quality at all . I th...

Hi there! Welcome to the forums. Looks like you are a frog chilling out on a rocking-chair with a banjo. Maybe I will not be the weirdest reptile thing lurking out here anymore... Re: A guideline for minimal audio configuration

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't JACK sit on top of ALSA? I didn't know it was possible to run JACK without it. You are correct. Jack runs in user space and it routes audio to a back-end. Doesn't have to be ALSA: it can be OSS, FFADO, Core Audio (on macs) or many others. The actual audio functi...

Re: lets talk about apple mac

In general I thought that OS X had a beautiful interface, but one that I couldn't customize at all. I must be in the minority that absolutely hate Mac OS interface. I cannot stand how multiple desktop and screens are managed, and how it cycles focus between windows, and how laggy thee effects are. ...

Re: lets talk about apple mac

Simple choice, free vs non-free, I'll choose free. Interestingly, Apple actually does publish a fair bit of open source code: https://opensource.apple.com/. In fact, there is an Open Source distribution based around the Mac OS core code: PureDarwin . So, in theory it is possible to have Mac OS free...

Re: lets talk about apple mac

Are you happy with your linux-audio-system? Yep, very. I cannot recall the last time it took me a lot of time to set it up either. I think that once you are over the top of the learning curve, and you know what you are doing, Linux is really not different from anything else in terms of performance ...

Re: Why I can't get away from Windows (for now)

Hi! I think the exchange is interesting, so I will jump in. Being a die-hard Linux user is sort of likee being an exclusive barefoot runner. Limitations like what? I don't see any significant besides Dante protocol, but it's way out of scope of home/stage user. Others are lack of knowledge or intell...

Re: Stay Tuned Studio Music 64 debian buster + kx studio based

Hi Gennaro! Interesting project, thanks for sharing! I would suggest you double check whether you want to describe your project as a "distro". There isn't a rigid definition of what a distro is, and your project would definitely fit the bill, however most people associate a distro with something hav...

Re: 256GB Micro SD Card not deteted properly on Ubuntu Studio 19.04

Hi! Is the SD Card formatted? If so, what is the file system? Chances are that you might need to install a package to enable support for the filesystem your SD card is formatted with.
