Electric guitar time stretch - quality differences between Ardour and Audacity?

I've stretched vocals and bass using Audacity, and the results have been good (by stretch I mean stretching the reference track to a lower tempo, then recording bass or singing to it, and then shrinking the recorded track into the original tempo we want the song to be). I then export those tracks to...

Why is there values mismatch between amixer and alsamixer?

I'd like to set a keyboard-driven volume control (+ key for volume up, - for volume down) that is coherent with the volume levels used by alsamixer. My Internet research shows that the command to use for that would be amixer sset. However, if I open alsamixer, and in a different terminal I send amix...

Re: Kick starting creativity

I compose most of my songs in a crappy old guitar, with a crack covered with dutch tape and the strings waay far from the neck. Very often nothing comes out of it, but under such constrains, when something is good you really know it's good, because there's no place to hide: voice+creaky chords, and ...

Re: best distro for old pc, or other solutions

Puppy Studio is very fast because it runs in RAM + it uses the Real Time kernel.
But it is not longer maintained...

Re: First track gets recorded into the second one

Hey guys, I just wanted to update the news about my mysterious bleeding affair. I installed Lubuntu and, under the same conditions and configuration, the bleeding is no more. So it probably was caused by the extreme leanness of Puppy Studio, perhaps skipping something important. Thank you everybody ...

Re: First track gets recorded into the second one

I'd just like to say that I'm still chasing after this. The solution to my problem I mentioned above turned out to be only partial. Here's where I am now: I can record via G-Track and have monitoring through it, but then I have to record at 32,000 Hz -plus the darn bleeding that started this all!-, ...

Re: First track gets recorded into the second one

Hey Briandc, I followed your advice and went to the Audacity forum. To tell the truth, I was a bit afraid of being trolled for ignoring the red warning, but the people there have been very friendly. In fact, I'm prudent to say this before I make some groundwork, but I think the problem is solved. He...

Re: First track gets recorded into the second one

Have you checked all the mixers installed on your system to ensure that all unused inputs are muted? Yes, I think I did at some point, but I've tried again anyway just in case. Alsamixer shows two devices: 1) HDA Intel (inbuilt sound card) I tried setting to 0 (+muting when available) ALL parameter...

Re: First track gets recorded into the second one

Sorry for the delay in answering, I went on vacation to a place with a difficult non-Linux friendly 3G connection and a nephew addicted to Clash of Clans (go figure)... I finally got to try the alsa in command, and the bleeding persists. This refutes that the problem could be related to a conflict b...

Re: First track gets recorded into the second one

Thank you so much for your detailed explanation, which opens a new line of investigation. I did not know about alsa_in and alsa_out, I was afraid I might not have them installed because my distro is pretty minimal (Puppy Studio), but I've checked and do have them, so I've added the new tests to the ...

Re: First track gets recorded into the second one

I am not at home right now and won't be able to try your suggestions for a few days, but as soon as I can, I'll report the results here (I'll try to make it by the weekend). I'm curious... why do you prefer Jack? Does it make any difference in a case like this? In my view it only adds one layer of c...

Re: First track gets recorded into the second one

Thank you so much Luster. It's funny, your post, in a way, brings me back a part of myself I had forgotten. I did not remember that Audacity wiki -I did the transition to Ardour like a year ago or so-, but looking back it is too much coincidence, so pretty surely I saw that tutorial and it sublimina...

Re: First track gets recorded into the second one

OK, thank you for trying. As a poorman's soultion, I'm going to try doing some gating. The bleeding sounds quite low when using the G-Track (however, as soon as you normalize, you hear IT'S THERE, and it sums up the more layers you add...) Anyway, thanks you both. It's been a great opportunity to ge...
