Re: Do you want more people to use Linux for music?

The more the merrier! I don't think musicians swarming to Linux is a problem that we will be lucky enough to have though. I use Linux because it works, and because the other two real options for a desktop OS are offensive to me on an ethical level. But to be 100% honest, making music on Linux has st...

Re: Best current Ubuntu for KXStudio

I had a drive failure last week Do you want to get the data back? I've had good results with ddrescue : https://www.gnu.org/software/ddrescue/manual/ddrescue_manual.html Thanks merlyn! I got 100% recovery. I run Back in Time nightly so restoring was easy (I'm a little excessive with backing up at h...

Re: Best current Ubuntu for KXStudio

This is bad news for me; I've just installed Ubuntu Studio last weekend and was about to add the KX repos (and amongst other things I wanted to use Cadence instead of Ubuntu Studio Controls). Do you remember where you read that? Do you have a link maybe? Erich Eickmeyer from Ubuntu Studio has said ...

Re: solo ambient guitar

I found this quite mesmerizing. Very nice to hear some real-world plucked strings in this style of music.

Downright cinematic.

Dragging my feet on exploring VCV because it looks way too complicated for me, but this clip might inspire me to dig in.

Re: Song for Evelyn

Lovely. It almost seems as though there's a space left in the song for words that may be too hard to find right now.

Peace to you and your family and thank you for sharing this.

Re: My first recording in a full Linux environment ^^

This is a lovely soundscape. Congrats on finishing your first all-Linux project and hope there will be more! I might suggest placing an EQ on the master bus and lowering the midrange just a bit. That might open up some sonic space. Also I notice that there is very little (if any?) stereo panning, an...

Re: Anyone used Pop!_OS ?

When I tried it last year it just seemed like a brown themed version of Ubuntu (a color Ubuntu wisely moved away from years ago). There were no kernel tweaks that made it a better choice for audio work. I got excited about Pop!_OS (what an awkward name) when they announced it because all the promo c...

Best PPAs for music?

What's your favorite Debian or Ubuntu repo specifically for music software?

I mean besides KX Studio.

Are there any?

Re: Best current Ubuntu for KXStudio

I would say Neon, it means you'll get up to date plasma but base of 18.04 LTS. I wouldn't bother with 19 unless you really have to. Unless there's a particular feature you really really need, I agree on sticking with 18.04, any flavor. It's a solid base and LTS. The only exception would be Ubuntu S...

I'm just hearing it for the first time thanks to the bump. The style is way off my regular menu but I think it's EXCELLENT.

Re: Any guitarists have ideas for creating this effect with plugins? Shallow Water

Thanks for the great pointers! To get Shallow Water it might be worth thinking about VCV rack, or PD where there are LFOs, filters and randomness. I thought VCV was a synth--I can put audio through it? That might be interesting if yes. What is "PD"? I can get close to some of the sounds th...

Any guitarists have ideas for creating this effect with plugins? Shallow Water

I find this sound captivating. It seems like, in theory, I should be able to replicate what it is doing. I messed around with various plug-in chains using Calf tape emulation and chorus stuff to try and replicate it but can't even get close. I think it's the randomness and also the "low pass ga...

Re: what is xrun?

Also, sometimes xruns make a click or a pop, but much of the time they leave no audible trace. So it's good to minimize them, but you don't need to obsess about them if you're not having trouble. Ardour and Mixbus (maybe others?) have a setting that will place a marker when an xrun occurs. This is a...
