That's pretty strange, that should be a fairly standard part of the system. Do you know exactly which file you need? You might be able to find that package with 'apt-file search filename' (to install apt-file, 'apt-get install apt-file; apt-file update'). Shouldn't really be needed for such a basic...

Thanks very much for the info, Steve. That's very helpful. Apparently the Alsa driver package isn't in the Ubuntu repositories. Now I just need to learn how to install from a .tar.bz2, which is what that package is. Kinda spoiled, I guess, since .deb is so easy, almost like Windows :wink: . Very coo...

Yes, Ubuntu 10.10 sees that something is there and on start-up, just prior to the log-in screen it says: EMU something (goes by so fast) firmware not found. I searched the forums here first for any mention of this before posting. I've successfully installed the latest 64bit Ubuntu version and the recording software I've been using in Windows (Adobe Audition under Wine) but the hardware, E-MU 1820, isn't recognized and I can't install the software it use...
