Re: Poor Usability - Why virtual Potentiometers (knobs) in Computer Audio Software, why?

That's your opinion and you are entitled to it, but I still disagree. In my opinion, numerical parameters are not necessarily more informative than a visual knob. They only become necessary to consider when automating parameters in a DAW. It's about the efficiency and naturalness of use, not about ...

Rotary knobs are functionally sliders. You hold on the knob and drag left/right or up/down. That's the problem. Let me describe in a little more detail what the exact problem is: You press the rotary knob by pointing with the mouse cursor on that rotary knob, and now there are two problems: The rot...

I'll just have to disagree. The rotation state of a knob is more informing than just a numerical value without context. The rotary knob is difficult to adjust with the mouse, it's unnatural and it doesn't show exact values like numbers do. That's why a rotary knob is not a good control for a GUI. I...

Here's the simple mockup that shows of what Dexed could look like without knobs. So you can imagine it. The mockup is not complete, I have not replaced all the knobs. dexed_gui_mockup.png The first operator in the top left corner gives a rough idea of what that might look like. The knobs were either...

Poor Usability - Why virtual Potentiometers (knobs) in Computer Audio Software, why?

Dear Developers, Many virtual instrument interfaces are designed to mimic the look of real hardware. They might look nice and fancy, but these knobs are poorly usable on a computer with PC-102 keyboard and a mouse. This copy of real hardware gives you the look, but not the feel of real hardware. So ...
