Odd Girl - Very Rough Mix

I'm finally starting to record some music in Linux, after a couple of false starts. I'm still fairly new at using Ardour, and I'm only using the plugins that came with the distro so far as I need some practice with using it, but I've recorded a song. It's a rough mix (I don't even have any vocals re...

Re: pulseaudio to Pipewire - Ubuntu Studio 22.04

@tkmusic Unless you prefer to run a bleading edge Linux distro or compile software from source I don't reccomend switching to PipeWire at this time. The problem you are experiencing is also present in Ubuntu Studio 23.04. To address the instability with PipeWire and JACK the distribution maintainer...

pulseaudio to Pipewire - Ubuntu Studio 22.04

I've heard a lot of things revolving around Pipewire and wanted to give it a shot. Since my distro already has ALSA, pulseaudio, and JACK with it, I looked up this tutorial and used this site for further support. It seemed to work at first, as Ardour opened up, played, and recorded fine, but when I ...

Re: Buskers - Hellhole in the Sofa (Video made using Linux software)

Good first effort, as others have said do keep them coming! Since you mentioned being new to JACK and all that, I thought I'd give a link to a talk I made at the last FOSDEM on how to "become a rockstar" using just Linux. The title is very much tongue-in-cheek of course, as I'm ...

Re: Buskers - Hellhole in the Sofa (Video made using Linux software)

I'm not putting any more work into it now [..] if I make something new and want some advice on production for it, I'll gladly take it then. I could always use a second pair of ears while working, but it's a little less frustrating when the mix is still fresh. I think it's best to just finish someth...

Re: Buskers - Hellhole in the Sofa (Video made using Linux software)

Not a problem. To be honest, I kinda regret posting that. It's not my style. I used to have a friend who would help with production tips, but we had a falling out a while back and he left some really nasty, personal-attack-type comments on that video in my OP (Youtube's spam filter blocked them, so ...

Re: Buskers - Hellhole in the Sofa (Video made using Linux software)

I don't want to sound like a jerk, ungrateful, or defensive when it comes to the production advice regarding this song or album, but I'm not putting any more work into it now and here's why: A lot of this material was recorded about a year ago on an old Mac a friend of mine gave me, and I had not st...

Re: Buskers - Hellhole in the Sofa (Video made using Linux software)

Nice shirt! (I'm a Voivod fan.) The mix in hellhole has improved, bass is more present, but it still sounds a bit thin. Good music though! I'd like maybe a bit more variation in the snare and kick sounds (velocity variation or round robins maybe?). Thanks. Voivod has been one of my favorite bands s...

Re: Buskers - Hellhole in the Sofa (Video made using Linux software)

I've taken this advice to mind, did some remixing, and I've completed the album that it's on. Link is below.

Buskers - Hellhole in the Sofa (Video made using Linux software)

I am still in the process of learning how to record music in Linux (JACK and Ardour have given me some hiccups, plus I've been too busy with work and school to really take the time to dive super-deep into it), but I wanted to show off something I made in Linux. I took a song I made a few months ago,...

No sound in Ardour

After some initial hiccups involving JACK, I thought I had finally gotten a handle (or as much of one as a newb like me has) on using Ardour to record something. I figured out how the plugin system worked, then recorded something with my Bass and made a simple drum pattern using my MIDI keyboard. Th...

Re: Do you listen to/enjoy your own music regularly?

Tape hiss can be a blessing: I used to love the intro to Megadeth's "into the lungs of hell", which I had on tape. Later I bought the cd, and found out that there's horns playing a crappy melody, which ruined the experience for me. Never noticed it with my cassette. Which CD version? The ...

Re: Do you listen to/enjoy your own music regularly?

I have a tendency to do that, especially if I'm working on a song. So many times I've listened to a WIP and realize I need to adjust a level somewhere.

Re: Noise when using JACK

Sorry if I'm necroing an old thread, but I'm running into a similar issue. I'm trying to test recording in Ardour, and I'm getting a lot of staticy noise coming out of the speakers. It's not just with any MIDI input: I get the same result when I try to play anything with my bass. I've tried lowering...

Re: External Speakers in JACK

I was just about to post a whole bunch of screenshots showing the whole connection setup, but before I did that I changed the Master USB device to the Presonus in Studio Controls and it seems to be working. I had to double check with some random audio I already have to hear if it worked, but it soun...
