Re: PC build

The thing I don't like about nvidia is that it limits your kernel choices. Most of the time the kernel I'm running can't install the proprietary driver. Without the proprietary driver there is no GPU encode.

GPU encoding works pretty well on the Intel chips.

Re: PC build

NVMe and SATA ssd prices are pretty much on par now too. One other thing that possibly only applies to Intel is to check if secure boot can still be disabled in the mobo UEFI. It sounds like at some point they are going to force secure boot on us. Not really the end of the world, but if you like to ...

Re: PC build

Onboard intel or amd more than adequate for audio work station. For listening-only, I suppose so. Otherwise, get a decent external audio interface. That was referring to onboard graphics not audio. Obviously dedicated audio interface is a must. Kind of surprising that dedicated graphics would be ne...

Re: Z-curious... anybody using Zrythm for actual production?

there is no reason at all to use ALSA, I might even remove the option from the binaries to avoid these issues. if you want a pro audio setup then use JACK, otherwise use PulseAudio (both are compatible with PipeWire too). I don't think ALSA is supposed to be used by high level applications Direct t...

Re: PC build

I'm not sure how many packages might be available for arm. You can certainly do it but you can build much faster cpu and install more ram into an intel or amd system. Kind of depends on what you really want to do. If you want full bore DAW mixing a whole lot of channels I don't think i would look at...

Re: Audio Cards that work with Linux. Recommendations?

I'm afraid that I do not agree. Many of the more expensive ones require a driver and/or Windows setup utility. Some of 'm may work after some puzzeling (see some of the very long topics here on 'm), but that's not for the faint of heart and Linux beginners. There are less Class Compliant devices ou...

Re: Can't install ardour on Ubuntu 20.04 on vanilla install plus kx.studio ppa

I think most of the packages in the KX Studio repos are no longer maintained and becoming outdated. I no longer add the repo to my apt sources but rather just download the packages for apps like Carla, Cadence etc from the website and install them manually. These AFAIK are the only apps still mainta...

Re: Audio Cards that work with Linux. Recommendations?

For USB devices in the 2-4 channel range I think most if not all should work fine. Might be better to compile a list of any that don't work.

I also have a UMC404HD and I like it fine. I still have a Delta 66 PCI card but it needs external preamps.

Re: Has anyone been able to compile Zrythm on Debian 11?

Had a quick look at the git. One thing I see is that it uses GTK4 which is not available in bullseye packages. It would have to be compiled and installed manually before you can start trying to compile Zrythm. Not a trivial process in itself. Beyond that, not sure. It has a lot of build dependencies...

Re: Pipewire-Fedora35 live dvd -pipewire is default, audio tools seem OK

Pipewie-alsa would seem that pipewire may not timeout and release the hardware like pulse audio did. I wonder if it will be necessary to manually stop the pipewire service to have direct access to alsa? Pasusspender has always seemed to do the trick for pulse in the past. Perhaps there is a pipewire...

Re: Airwindows Discussion

I played around again last night and realized that my CPUs had not been set to performance. Changed that and life was good again at 48k/64/3. There is something odd going on with my system since latest upgrade though. My RT kernel and kernels booted with threadirqs are worse than a normal kernel. If...

I just do live effects so 32 or 64 frames is about as high a latency as i can deal with. It has to sound right or I can't play it right.
