Re: Continuing the jack/pipewire debate...
I installed opensuse tumbleweed today (along with the geekos addition), which comes with pipewire installed and am pleasantly surprised to find that my Focusrite Saffire Pro40 works with it (least with playback so far). I read ages ago that Firewire wasn't intended to be supported. The FFADO mixer ...

Re: Studio One - Linux version
It's bonkers to charge for a beta version. This means the Linux beta is open to 1) people who already use Studio One on Mac or Windows 2) Linux users who can try the 30 day demo. I actually think people who already use Studio One on another platform are the target audience for this demo. It’s not i...

Re: Continuing the jack/pipewire debate...
Pipewire should at least sort out these features before releasing 1.0: Automatic switch of sink/source when new a device is connected Remembering mute states I think the first of those actually is implemented at this point. I have been able to switch between onboard audio and my USB audio interface...

Re: Studio One - Linux version
I understand why they're requiring Wayland, but it is sort of a drag. I had been looking forward to trying this out, but it seems I can only use native Intel graphics with Wayland, and not my Nvidia graphics. I have no experience with Wayland whatsoever, so I may be wrong, but after enabling Wayland...

Re: Studio One - Linux version
Apple's market share is around 10% today. In 1997, it was about 4%. In the music world, it's probably greater than 50%, particularly in what's left of the big studio market.

Re: Studio One - Linux version
Elsewhere in the product announcement is the mention of a new DAW file format for sharing session files between DAWs. PreSonus developed this format in collaboration with Bitwig. If I were to speculate, the Bitwig collaboration probably had some impact on their decision to develop a Linux version. O...

Re: Studio One - Linux version
Consulting with the lin-vst and yabridge devs would be wise. Unfortunately, this is probably not going to happen. Typically, DAW manufacturers reply on plug-in makers to ensure that plugins work, and don't take a lot of responsibility for what 3rd party developers do. And I think this goes double f...

Re: Continuing the jack/pipewire debate...
For me, jack just work, pipewire does not. Every now and then, I try again but then I go back to jack (just in few minutes). No good resons to waste time when there's a perfect (for my needs...) working solution. I'll wait pipewire 1.0 before trying again. If you have a system that is already worki...

Re: Studio One - Linux version
It's true that Linux already has multiple DAWs available, and I've never personally been that interested in Studio One. However, I doubt that any of the currently-existing Linux DAWs has the userbase that Studio One has with the exception of Reaper: https://gearspace.com/board/best-studio-gear/12118...

Re: Studio One - Linux version
I think you need to buy a license first, and then you get access to the Linux version. From what I can read here, they're mostly going after plugin developers and people who already use Studio One but want to try it on Linux: https://support.presonus.com/hc/en-us/articles/19214558269581-Linux-Gettin...

Re: Continuing the jack/pipewire debate...
Okay, I'm old as well, and I've been using Linux for over 20 years. You'll get no argument from me that Pipewire feels like a reinvention of the wheel. I hesitated to update to more recent distro for a long time because I kept reading about how it isn't ready for pro audio, how you still need JACK, ...

Re: Studio One - Linux version
I sincerely doubt this. How many musicians/producers would there be who use Linux in a professional capacity? For amateurs such as me there's more than enough quality and variety to be found among extant linux DAWs already, free and commercial. Linux is a viable OS, but far from commercially intere...

Re: Studio One - Linux version
I've never been interested in Studio One before, but this has my attention. Most importantly, I really hope this will show other DAW and plugin makers that Linux is a viable market.

Re: SSL and Harrison consoles
Yeah, embedded Linux and desktop Linux are two different things as far as users are concerned. The new Ableton push runs Linux, and can load Live sets in standalone mode, which means that Ableton must have a build of Live that runs on Linux, but they're not releasing it to end users anytime soon. FW...

Re: Better lowlatency kernel one version lower than generic?
I had always been an advocate of low-latency kernels. But on my current machine, I'm using the generic kernel with pre-empt patches and it's working well. Now, I should mention that the kernel and patches were installed by default on my distro, as is a special scheduler that gives real-time prioriti...
