You're absolutely right! I didn't realise that. All I needed to do was connect MuSE to Hydrogen in the ALSA tab in qjackctl.

I've just bought a 3rd Gen 18i8. Audio works out of the box. It doesn't show up as a MIDI interface, presumably because it's still in 'MSD Mode'.
