Re: Jotunheim - Playing live to backing tracks.

Nice song and playing!

When I saw you had a Mesa, I was expecting a massive guitar sound, so the phone recording was a surprise. Would love to hear a fully mixed/mastered version.

Re: Lament

Thanks, cabsi, I appreciate the feedback (especially since I was trying to make it sound very full, even with the limited number of instruments).

I used effects that came with Bitwig (my DAW). Some delay, some reverb, and parametric EQ. Oh, and some compression on the guitar.

Re: How do you write/sequence drums?

When composing, I pretty much never start with drums (although obviously I have time signature in mind). However, I rarely compose in the DAW. For me, composing mostly happens on instruments (or on paper) outside of the DAW, and then I use the DAW/recording/etc. to realize that composition. An excep...

Re: Focusrite Scarlett 18i20 2nd Gen mixer driver

Have you tried the driver with latest changes from me? No, I haven't. I'm currently using the driver included in the main kernel (currently running 5.9.9-arch1-1). FWIW, to get that to work I needed to plug the 18i8 Gen2 into a USB 3.0 port and make sure it used xhci. Currently, I have the 18i8 Gen...

Lament

This is a short piece that started out with me just recording a guitar chord progression to keep track of it. After that I improvised a melody on a low G whistle, and then had my daughter play some viola and added that, too. Drums and bass are software instruments added in the DAW (I use Bitwig). La...

Re: Focusrite Scarlett 18i20 2nd Gen mixer driver

Despite everything previously working fine, I ran into some recent trouble starting Jack . Eventually, my troubleshooting led me to the step of disabling the mixer driver (which was working fine while Jack wasn't running). Once I disabled the mixer driver, I could start Jack, again. The error messag...

Re: Jack failing to start (previously working)

Well, I've found that if I disable the Focusrite Scarlett Gen 2 Mixer Driver, Jack starts and works normally. If the Mixer Driver is enabled, Jack is failing with the errors listed above. I also found it doesn't matter how I start Jack: using qjackctl, using jack_control, and using cadence all give ...

Jack failing to start (previously working)

I've been running Jack using Cadence for a long time with no issues, but suddenly I'm getting an error when trying to start Jack. Running Arch and using a Scarlett 18i8. Config can be seen below: https://i.imgur.com/lkMb0XS.png https://i.imgur.com/n249s2P.png After attempting to start Jack, the foll...

Re: Focusrite Scarlett 18i20 2nd Gen mixer driver

For the record, investigating the ehci/xhci settings led to the driver working for me, now. In my case, the BIOS settings that were available to me were "correct," but I needed to plug the Scarlett into a USB 3.0 port in order for the system to use xhci. After that, everything worked as ex...

Yeah, I think a git repository on github (or gitlab or whatever) would be a good choice.

Re: Focusrite Scarlett 18i20 2nd Gen mixer driver

I just bought and hooked up an 18i8 2nd gen (used a Mac to run the Focusrite mixer/config software), so I was really pleased to find this discussion. Is this driver still under development and is the source available?

Bitwig Studio might be worth looking into (the clip launcher/scenes feature would be useful for live performances).

Re: Advice for a DAW under Linux (don't laugh, please!)

But with me first the question rases what kind of music you want to go produce. The anwer is important for the right choises. That interesting. I'm just getting started with recording, and I'm using Bitwig. I mainly record mic'd guitar and vocals, but I also want sampler and MIDI for bass, drums, k...
