Re: Damn, *which* USB interfaces actually work with KXStudio/Ubuntu????

The topic starter was talking about Midi devices. Not per se about audio interfaces. This confused me in the first place too. The 2i4 is a midi interface, in addition to audio. I'm using it for both. For what it's worth, before I bought the 2i4, I was using this midi interface without any trouble: ...

Re: vinyl plugin

At the risk of being Captain Obvious, there is this: https://freesound.org/search/?q=vinyl+static

The first sample in the search result seems like it would probably do the trick.

Re: Damn, *which* USB interfaces actually work with KXStudio/Ubuntu????

I've had great results with Focusrite Scarlett 2i4 1st gen, no trouble getting my JACK server to use it for audio and midi. I've read reports from others that have also easily gotten other Scarlett models to work, such as 2i2, 2i4 2nd gen, etc.

Re: Philharmonia Orch. Samples!

Some of the samples used in Virtual Playing Orchestra are derived from Philharmonia. I haven't seriously perused Philharmonia's samples myself, but certainly there are useful things in there.

Re: Recommended motherboards

My music machine is mostly cobbled together out of parts scavenged from my brother's old gaming rig. I have no idea what the motherboard is, other than I get an ASUS splash screen on startup. I'm running Elementary OS + KXStudio repos, and it doesn't give me trouble (anymore*) * Side story: In the p...

Aegean Symphonic Orchestra

Heh, somebody took the samples from Virtual Playing Orchestra (among others) and repackaged them as a soundfont (SF2): https://sites.google.com/view/hed-sounds/aegean-symphonic-orchestra Of course it doesn't have all of the goodies that are available from SFZ format, but on the other hand it doesn't...

Re: A Different Perspective

I smile to read experiences like this. The other day I stepped outside for a moment and saw a big swoosh of clouds lit up by the sunset, it struck my fancy the same way as when I was seven years old. You never really know when one of these experiences will happen, but certainly taking time away from...

Sweden

Perfectly executed, with plenty of joy (and other emotions), including the audience. To be so free to express music this way must be exhilarating. https://youtu.be/-PkdLMIz-Ys?t=327 (Cued up to skip the interview at the beginning, but that might be interesting to those that understand Swedish.) If y...

Re: Newbie Mixdown Help

I could barely hear the intro from 0:00 to 0:10 - I think I understand the effect that you're going for, but maybe you muffled it a little too much? It does sound nice and crisp once it gets moving. Nice use of panning and reverb to give the different sounds their own stage presence.

That's not entirely true, I've been listening to some of your recordings probably about 100 times over the last few weeks

Re: Condenser Mic

Thanks everybody. To give more detail, I'll likely be recording in a room with bad acoustics and no sound treatment. As such, I don't want any of the room ambience at all. Furthermore, I imagine mixing live instruments and virtual instruments, which seems like it would go much better if the live tra...

I'm sorry, I'm out of ideas, other than try it on the host instead of the VM and see if you get the same results. Maybe somebody else around here can help.

Condenser Mic

I'm considering buying a condenser mic for the studio. I would primarily use it for recording acoustic instrumental parts, but I may also end up recording vocal parts at some point. I found a wide variety of used ones for less than $100 on reverb.com, but I don't really know what to shop for. I'm ju...
