Re: One Synth Challenge 81 ft. OxeFM

Good demo of the synth (without being obviously a demo!). Nice range of sounds.

Re: interesting read for anyone with USB interface

There are so very many ways to fiddle signal-noise figures that I would regard this as pure speculation until a truly independent comparison was done.

Re: No MIDI sound with Rosegarden

The thing is you've already proved the audio side is working. You said earlier you could get sound when using Yoshimi's own virtual keyboard. Therefore the problem is only a MIDI one, and as it is failing to work with programs that are entirely within the machine it can't be any kind of soundcard is...

Re: Yoshimi random detune feature

Yes. The feature is 'per part' and even if we stored it, you would still be able to change it when you reload. I hadn't thought of it before, but if you wanted two sounds exactly in unison, one with and one without this, then set for 32 parts. By default parts 1 and 17 (e.g.) are on the same MIDI ch...

Re: No MIDI sound with Rosegarden

There is something seriously screwy going on here :( I assume you did run Qjackctl before Yoshimi on these last tests? Also, I take it you are logging in as a normal user, not as root. As well as being risky, root access can mess about with some systems expecting normal user access. I'm afraid I'm r...

Yoshimi random detune feature

A setting for this has been in the part edit window for quite a long time. There are 20 steps of approximately half a cent. This is applied as a pitch variation to the note-on event, so is per note, and also per part (but the whole part not just one engine). At the extreme it's ideal for comedy stuf...

Re: No MIDI sound with Rosegarden

OK, that's progress. You've now proved that that jack and your sound system is alright. Something I forgot is that by default Yoshimi starts with jack MIDI while Rosegarden is alsa MIDI only. If it's not too much trouble you can launch yoshimi from a terminal window with "yoshimi -a -K", that will s...

Re: seq24 - how to connect to other apps?

I understand someone has a fork on github that has had a degree of development. I don't know how far he's got.

Re: No MIDI sound with Rosegarden

OK, so Rosegarden is definitely sending messages and Qsynth is definitely not listening to anything. Forget Qsynth for the moment. Try running a softsynth, either Yoshimi or ZynAddSubFX (I'm not going to get into arguments about which one). These *always* at least give to a basic sinewave sound on c...

Re: No MIDI sound with Rosegarden

OK, I think we are getting closer. So to be sure, with Vkeybd if you play the keys you can get sound from qsynth and you see the activity light flash? Correct? With Rosegarden connected to QmidiRoute, you won't get sound, but you should see CCs and notes being listed in its window. Are you? Rosegard...

Re: No MIDI sound with Rosegarden

Ok, so Rosegarden thinks it's sending data. That's good. Umm. I can see the grey dot in your screengrab - bottom left between the green + and the word Qsynth1 :) The fact that this is not flashing green means the two are not talking to each other for some reason. With everything set up and (supposed...

Re: No MIDI sound with Rosegarden

Curiouser and curiouser :( OK, I'm wondering if there is something odd about that MIDI file, it seems you're not getting any note-offs for a start. In File->Open there is an 'examples' option. Look for one called the-rose-garden.rg I've just double checked it and it runs perfectly with a number of s...
