Re: Optimizing bass guitar?
I haven't tried that. I figured 0.0 gain should be fine, but hey, maybe I'll like the sound better with something negative.

Re: Optimizing bass guitar?
Alright, I picked the Orchid Micro for my DI box and plugged it in and messed with guitarix's Ardour plugins. Right away, I noticed using a DI box made my bass's sound infinitely more, I guess, "present" in my computer rather than distant, and so so malleable by the effects at my disposal....

Re: Optimizing bass guitar?
emarsk--That is a really good idea. I'll do it the next time I have someone in here with me. bazsound--I'm not sure, because the knobs on my bass aren't labeled. Should I just try turning them all down and turning up the gain on the computer? If it's going through Guitarix, should I turn up the pre-...

Re: Optimizing bass guitar?
Yeah, I was researching them and ran into Radial's stuff as well. So, if I'm only going to use this for recording an electric guitar, bass, and keyboard, do I need the transformer? It seems like I'd be sacrificing sound for safety with one. Should I spend some more money on a Radial Pro48 (like the ...

Re: Optimizing bass guitar?
So, when I mentioned I didn't know much about the Guitarix effects, I meant it--I didn't even know about the Amp Impulse, Cabinet, Impulse Response, and Tonestack modules or what they could do until I tried reading the wiki just now! I've checked /usr/share/gx_head and I suspect these IR files are a...

Re: Optimizing bass guitar?
At first, I didn't use software monitoring in Ardour, and that didn't improve the sound of my other bass. I'll try it on this one. I use SB as output because I have a very makeshift-yet-great speaker system, and I haven't bothered to learn how to plug speakers into my M-Audio card, or even if I can....

Optimizing bass guitar?
So, I finally got myself a Fender Precision bass, and while it sounds a lot better than my last one, it still isn't as amazing as I hoped. I'm running an M-Audio Delta 1010LT, JACK2, Ardour, and Guitarix. Going directly from Guitarix to my speakers, it sounds amazing, but once I plug it into Ardour,...

Re: Using Rosegarden with recorded audio files?
What kind of program would be best for an extreme level of sound manipulation? A sampler? I have jsampler installed, but I haven't checked it out and I don't know if it's the best for that. Or is it petri-foo?

Re: Using Rosegarden with recorded audio files?
Thanks! I think I should be able to figure it out from here. I thought it had something to do with importing audio files into Rosegarden, but I guess I need to learn Qsynth. A college class I started between now and when I first made this topic has actually taught me how a synth works, so Qsynth mak...

Re: Newbie to audio recording
Funny story about that--my parents named me after Jimi Hendrix, but had James be my legal name for some reason. In middle school, I had a teacher who gave me this nickname because of that song, but it wasn't until a few years later that I got into the Beastie Boys myself. So I guess you could say it...

Using Rosegarden with recorded audio files?
I've read the Rosegarden manual and looked around the program itself, as well as Googled and searched this forum, and I can't find what I'm looking for or figure it out myself (and I might be looking in the wrong place for all I know). I'm 100% new to MIDI, synths, and everything else Rosegarden doe...

Newbie to audio recording
Hello, all. I've been a musician for a long time (bass, guitar, and learning piano), but I'm just now getting into writing music. Thanks to school, I actually have plenty of experience working with Pro Tools and condenser mics, so I didn't start out completely in the dark when, over a month ago, I b...
