Suddenly - Jack problems (on upgrade)
I have been running KXStudio for a while and liking it a lot. I have a Scarlett 2i4, which worked just fine out of the box. I normally used it at 48K, buffer size 128, 2 periods/buffer. I know that I was able to use it at least down to a buffer size of 32. After recently doing all of sudo apt-get up...

Re: help with small studio setup - taking it to a higher lev
It sounds like your limit is the number of ins/outs on your interface, preventing you from recording a full band at the same time or sending to lots of outboard gear. Is that right? Its fine to record drums separately from the rest of the band provided your drummer can handle it, but there's no nee...

Re: help with small studio setup - taking it to a higher lev
My desired workflow is (at least sometimes) to record live drums, mix down to a single stero track, then add additional tracks. No. Don't do this. If you're going to record drums on separate tracks, keep them on separate tracks. I know, but presently I have no way to get that many tracks into my DA...

help with small studio setup - taking it to a higher level
My basic question concerns how to get the sound from mics and instruments into my DAW (i.e., interface options). I have a pretty fast computer runing Linux Studio. I'm just getting back in to writing and recording, and working in linux (Ardour, Hydrogen, ZynAddSubFX, LinuxSampler, Guitarix, occasion...

Re: can run only as root
Hi, and thanks for the reply. I had tried that, and also just rebooting, etc. As I worked on it, the problem seemed increasingly random, and then other apps started crashing as well. I then learned that lots of people have had trouble with Ubuntu 12.10, to which I had been auto-upgraded at some poin...

can run only as root
Suddenly no jack-related sound applications run for me except as root. They all fail on startup in various ugly ways. So it would seem to be a permissions issue of some sort. However, to dismiss the obvious, yes I am a member of the group 'audio', and in /etc/security/limits.d there is a file called...

Re: Dream Studio + Jack/Pulse
Just heard from Dick MacInnis on the Dreamn Studio forum. Two corrections to my previous post: 1. You can check 'realtime' in QJackCtl even without a realtime kernel -- it runs Jack with realtime permissions, which can be done without a realtime kernel. 2. There is a script in Dream Studio to kill p...

Re: Dream Studio + Jack/Pulse
OK, piecing together clues from this thread and another on the same topic (at the Dream Studio forum), I was able to come up with a solution I came to the conclusion that I needed to simplify and that the fact that pulseaudio and jack were running simultaneously was quite possibly the source of my p...

Re: Dream Studio + Jack/Pulse
New Info: So I was listening to music through RhythmBox, with the sound set to go to "Soeakers/Built-in Audio" (and playing through them), then quit Jack and the sound cut out. I restart Jack and RhythmBox now show up as a device in Jack (it never had before), but no matter how I connect a...

Re: Dream Studio + Jack/Pulse
Thanks again. Maybe I'll try to Dream Studio forum as well. I installed aqualung and ran it. It shows up fine in Jack, I can connected it to whatever, but no sound. (I tried all possible combinations of connections.) i also installed and ran Cadence but see nothing there that suggests what the probl...

Dream Studio + Jack/Pulse
I'm about to pull my hair out. (I'm trying various linux distros, including AVLilnux and Dream Studio (both seem to be great). Now I'm running Dream Studio (based on the latest Ubuntu) with all of the latest updates, because it seems to let pulsaeaduio and jack play nice.) I've looked at a lot of st...

Re: Jack sees only MIDI on my M-Audio FTP
What app do you use to listen to the radio? Actually the problem is not an app on the computer. The problem is that the wires to the monitors were just picking up a radio station -- it would come through the speakers (very very softly, but unmistakably) even if they were the only thing in the room ...

Different guy, I think! But thanks.Frank Carvalho wrote:Would you by any chance be the same Mike Dickson that I know so well from another mailing list, dealing with an odd, and sometimes white keyboard instrument filled with tapes? Frank Carvalho, M400 #160 here. Welcome! I've been a Linux musician for many years.

Re: Jack sees only MIDI on my M-Audio FTP
Update in case this is useful to anybody: I have two options: connect the keyboard MIDI controller to the M-Audio FTP, or directly to the computer via USB. In both cases I can use Jack to connect it to whatever I want, but the latter is *FAR* more stable. I was able to play anything I want for an ho...
