Re: What kind of musician am I?

The bad news: You're schizophrenic.

The good news: You should be able to get a group rate from your psychiatrist.

The best way to achieve this is to not drink so much that you blackout.

See? Some of my advice is actually useful.

Re: Microphone recommendations for speech

Actually, it was someone else who mentioned about condensers being "more sensitive" to noise. In fact, they aren't per se. They simply tend to be "hotter" than dynamic mics. That is to say, they record everything at a louder volume, and so it just seems as if the noise is louder ...

Re: Microphone recommendations for speech

I've worked in recording studios, and I've used mics by Neumann, AKG, Beyer, Senheisser, Shure, Electrovoice (EV), and others. I always recommend that people pick up a few Shure SM57 or SM58. (The 58 is essentially a 57 with a built-in wind shield. But you can also buy external foam windshields for ...

Hey, cut that out. It's my job to make sarcastic wisecracks around here. (Do you even have a union card?) I was duly elected to fill this role (with assistance from my "campaign manager", Vladimir Putin).

Re: EZDrummer alternative?

I've never tried BackupBand. Heathen! Infidel! Apple consumer! Why haven't you tried it? Because it's meant for live performance/practice, it's designed for maximum "instant gratification". There's no setup or learning curve required. Just unzip and run the BackupBand binary. Double-Click...

Re: Using MIDI for RPC

Is there a way to use MIDI to send arbitrary data? Yes. You put the data inside a "System Exclusive" MIDI message. This message starts with the hex byte F0 and ends with the hex byte F7. In between these two bytes can be any number of bytes, for any purpose. But the data bytes must be 7-b...

Re: E-mu 0404 and getting nowhere...

1) Run Synaptics . 2) Search for alsa firmware . 3) Mark that package for installation, and install. 4) Reboot. 5) Don't buy any Creative Labs audio card. Too many features are implemented in software (drivers) rather than hardware. So if you use third party drivers (alsa), typically not all feature...

Re: SF2 positioning questions

put the snare of a drum soundfont on key 1 Don't do that. For unpitched instruments (drums, cymbals, various percussion), try to use General MIDI Drum mapping. For example, midi note number 38 plays a snare, note 36 plays a kick, 51 plays a Ride Cymbal, etc. Here's a chart for GM Drums. MIDI Drum S...

I downloaded it You didn't download "update_0D.zip", right? That's only for upgrading from 0.C. If you unzip the instruments_44k.zip it should create an "Instruments" folder inside of "Home/BackupBand". Inside "Instruments" should be another folder "44kh...

jam sessions/improvisation Yes, that's one of the use cases for this software -- as a practice tool to improve one's technique, especially in regards to improvised solos. The other case is to provide quasi-live backing tracks for a gigging soloist, which is how I use it. It's meant to be used in a ...
