Re: Hi all what have you been up to of late?

been provocating the controll freaks of belgian social security system, with my idea to write an open source electronic music course and not finding (looking for) a regular job. been trying to educate and shelter a homeless amphetamine and techno addict, but finally found a good place for him to squ...

Re: Private courses in electronic music

... So I've set up a page on Google sites where I can collaborate with others on the document. Title: MyEMA (MyEMA means My Electronic Music Academy) Location: http://sites.google.com/site/myelectronicmusicacademy Just send me your e-mail if you want to add stuff, then I can invite you as collaborat...

Re: Private courses in electronic music

Maybe I should ask the FLOSSmanuals team to start a book for this idea, but that's only worth it if I'm not the only writer. I'm currently writing in Dutch, using Open Office, but FLOSS manuals has some nice features for a collaborative project. I already started a JSynthLib developers book there an...

Re: Private courses in electronic music

@spm_gl : A qualified degree might be a problem for some, but I think most beginners would just go for the insights, experience and fun. And also to prevent them from buying expensive material/software they didn't really need to get started. I might also split up the whole course in "modules&qu...

Re: Private courses in electronic music

I was thinking about a year or even two, three, four years, like regular music school. One lesson a week and sometimes skip a week gives students some time to experiment and play with the things they've learned. That's one of the advantages of teaching with open source software, they can all use it ...

Re: Private courses in electronic music

Hi Jan, thanks for your suggestions. they make a lot of sense indeed. #1: Getting started with basic music theory and talking about the differences and similarities between playing an instrument live in a band and composing in a home studio is a good way to get to know their musical taste, and warm ...

Private courses in electronic music

I'm thinking about giving private lessons to electronic music fans, to teach them how to make the music they like. There's enough room to set up several small home-studios at my place and given the cheap prices of digital gear these days, that's one of my plans. This way users can still choose to us...

Re: Writing a JSynthLib driver

Two weeks ago, I got a Yamaha CS2x from a friend who didn't use it. Today I finished the librarian support for the CS2x. The wiki I wrote while learning about programming java and jsynthlib has been a help already, but there's still much room for improvement. If it's hard or not probably depends on ...

Re: Writing a JSynthLib driver

Once you get the inner workings of JSynthLib, it's pretty exciting to develop an editor for a hardware synth. This morning I checked out the workings of how a sysexmessage is sent to the synth when a controller in JSynthLib is moved. Then discovered a mistake in my calculateChecksum method and now I...

Re: Writing a JSynthLib driver

I've finished the library support, so now I can request and dump any info from and to the SPD11 . This added some extra functionality to the SPD11: now I can copy one drumpad's settings to another pad, from another drumkit. Or I can copy the effects settings from one drumkit to another drumkit. The ...

Re: Why not advocate FOSS in music ? :D

Good idea, maybe go a little further and advocate freedom in general. After all, if nobody's free to choose to write free software, there will be no free software. Everybody has to "make an income", and only after doing that, we're free to write software that doesn't make an income. The fr...

Re: graphically GtkControllers

Glad you like it :) I've set the right permissions now, and also uploaded some other files, created for SynthEdit, but it looks like they're also useful for other projects, so maybe the synthedit-users group is also a good place to go looking. (btw: SE on linux - topic  ) Overview of my online...
