UbuntuStudio forces you to use Ubuntustudio-Controls to do that. For some odd reason they have intentionally made the KXstudio apps very difficult to use in their distro. SMH.

I'm not sure why you are having problems routing audio through the HDMI connection, but why not use a 3.5mm to RCA cable from your headphone jack to an input on the Pioneer?

I highly recommend you try AVLinux. Debian based, has all the proper repos already setup along with realtime kernel and all the necessary tweaks out of the box. Take a look at the alsamixer settings for the device. Sometimes the defaults are not right for certain devices (channels muted/pegged, monitor ports on/off, internal routing switches on/off, etc.)

I'm sure someone with experience will come along with a proper answer. If it wasn't midi data I would suspect a sample rate mismatch, however you might try creating an Ardour project with a different sample rate and try it anyway.
