Have you tried the drive with a different machine (owned by friends, schools, or libraries etc)?

Have you downloaded and studied the manual for your ASUS motherboard? (Some 'boards have their design quirks.) You mentioned removing the CMOS battery. Did you clear the CMOS by shorting out its jumper as well? Are you overclocking your machine? Have you tried resetting the BIOS to its default value...
