aside from just recording while playing and seeing if anything stands out... i have had great success with this technique http://www.ronjarzombek.com/rj12tone.html even if you feel nothing useful came out of it, i'm sure you could fine some interesting ways to get to different places you never knew ...

i use ubuntu (currently in a struggle with their rt kernel) i've been recording with gnu software for 5 years or so. i used ardour and hydrogen mostly ....still searching for a midi program i like (i dont believe one exists, i want midisoft v4) i write tech-metal mostly but i don't discriminate agai...
