its used extensively - pro and amateur.
it often makes the vocals sound more 'in tune' and makes things very strong. the other big thing pro's do is comp tracks down into a single take. i still prefer the beefiness of double tracking.

you'll need to make sure your input levels aren't too high that you're fuzzing out. chances are your preamp has two modes - one is a pad to attenuate -20db, the other is +4. use the -20db, and make sure you use the correct cable between your pre and the input. check your sound card settings and roll...

Hi All, I made all this exclusively on Linux, using Planet Ccrma/Fedora - mostly with Ardour and LADSPA, but also using Hydrogen, jamin etc..
