Re: Getting a good (guitar) sound across multiple listening devices. Advice?

...iirc this workes on mics with spherical patterns (no scifi, just audiotech-craft). But a Tonelab is really a great device and a very good choice, if i hadn't a small collection of amps, that would be my first choice. So to come back to your original post: could you provide a sample of your guita...

Re: CALF plugins?

What plugins are you thinking of that sound better but ate harder to understand? I am because I want to develop some "easy mode" plugins. I can't make any promises about when they will be released because I'm also trying to hold down a day job and take care of a house full of children, bu...

Re: CALF plugins?

Yes, LSP plugins are brilliant and offer so many possibilities, that I do not fully understand, especially when it comes to filter types and when to use what. Maybe a reasonable bag of presets could help out. Same for me. I can't say anything bad about options, except that it can become too much to...

Re: Getting a good (guitar) sound across multiple listening devices. Advice?

Hi, i would think the reference listening in a car meme gets a little overstretched at times. The main reason why it came up was that this was the place (other than the studio itself) where mixers and engineers in the olden times listened to music with the surplus of being in a constant listening p...

Re: Getting a good (guitar) sound across multiple listening devices. Advice?

Maybe you can try different headphones instead of different monitors... They say that the Audio-Technica ATH-M20X (only € 60!) are pretty good (there's a bluetooth variant of it too, dunno if that sounds worse). If I remember correctly the Spectre Sound Studios producer said they were OK or it was ...

Re: Getting a good (guitar) sound across multiple listening devices. Advice?

You could try a sound diffraction sphere to change the pattern of your mic slightly. https://www.neumann.com/en_en/produkte/microphone-accessories/sbk-130-a/ I remember another technique, where a wooden sphere of about 5cm in diameter is placed a few cms in front of your mic (yes, 0°) to get a bett...

Re: Getting a good (guitar) sound across multiple listening devices. Advice?

The producer from Spectre Sound Studios keeps on arguing the the (cabinet) speaker makes the difference in sound, not so much the amplifier (or the rest). So your experience in not getting the sound the way you want might be a well known one. You say you hear a difference between your "decent-...

Re: Getting a good (guitar) sound across multiple listening devices. Advice?

Hi, Another angle (probably not a popular one with the Plugin diehards)... I've been recording mic'd amps for many years and I have a few decent Fender tube amps and more available from other musician friends if wanted. With varying success I've used SM57's and Sennheiser e609's both separately and...

Re: Getting a good (guitar) sound across multiple listening devices. Advice?

You should consider recording always an additional DI signal from your guitar, directly from it's pickup. Then you have all choices concerning reamping, when it comes to mix. I do this now for quite a lot of years, no matter, if i'm tracking a band multitrack from a liveevent on a stage or if it's ...

Re: Getting a good (guitar) sound across multiple listening devices. Advice?

I don't know if you use an physical amp and a microphone to record your (electric?) guitar but getting the sound as good on the recording as it sounds live is a known problem/frustration of producers. See this video by Spectre Sound Studios on it, may not be your style of music but it might help: h...

Re: Getting a good (guitar) sound across multiple listening devices. Advice?

IMHO getting a good amped electric guitar sound recorded is a solved-problem, regardless of whether you're using free or proprietary software, since the advent of impulse response (IR) convolvers, guitar speaker cabinet IRs and neural amp modellers. Even with the previous generation of amp modeller...

Thanks for all the input! It feels great just to be able to air the issue and hear your perspectives. Talking to myself was of limited value (although not entirely without value).

Re: Getting a good (guitar) sound across multiple listening devices. Advice?

Just a half guess -- I'm not great on getting EG tones I like recorded either -- but how do your "reference" songs sound in your monitor speakers? My studio room is only partially treated (mostly bass trapping, with some first reflection handling) and some of my favorite tunes definitely ...

Re: Getting a good (guitar) sound across multiple listening devices. Advice?

If like me, you can't ID artists and their typical gear during casual listening, you'll want ampsims with accurately named and implemented presets, so you can use and modify them, and build a frame of reference for discussing and comparing your music with other musicians. BlueCat's Axiom ampsim has...
