Re: A guideline for minimal audio configuration
I had a good friend back when I was in school who was a Gentoo user. Always compiling something-or-other. "Why would I use someone else's binaries?" he used to say, as if he just couldn't see the price he was paying to have such a sleek and efficient system. I was an Ubuntu user at the ti...

Re: A guideline for minimal audio configuration
I'll try putting my system under load, and see how (un)stable it is. Do you recommend a specific way to test this? stress-ng --iomix 8 --ionice-class idle -t 5m or stress-ng --cpu 8 -t 5m 8 is the number of my CPU cores. Be careful with IO tests because it burns an SSD to death quickly. I burned an...

Re: A guideline for minimal audio configuration
Pulse audio is always bridged to jack on my system and it never caused a dropout/xrun. Is it a personal experience? A kind of trend? Where is the real problem exactly? Resampling? Devs wouldn't release those bridges if they didn't work at least for them. So is it a soundcard problem? Drivers? Pleas...

Re: A guideline for minimal audio configuration
Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't JACK sit on top of ALSA? I didn't know it was possible to run JACK without it. It's very difficult for an ALSA playback device or a pulseaudio sink to send audio to JACK without xruns or a lot of latencies. On the other hand, it's very straightforward for JACK o...

A guideline for minimal audio configuration
If you don't stick to this guideline, expect to spend weeks and months and still experience sound problems. Don't make ALSA or pulseaudio send audio to JACK through alsa_in, alsa_out, zita-ajbridge, alsa jack plugin, pulseaudio jack plugin, etc, ... If you do it, expect xruns, crackles, and pops. If...

Re: Are there affordable microphones that last for decades?
It's not about XLR being better than USB, it's a production thing. XLR mics are meant for daily use in studio or on stage, that's why they are usually better built than USB mics being used sporadically by a wannabe podcaster. Dynamic mics aren't complex "at all". And other "analog mi...

Re: Are there affordable microphones that last for decades?
Thanks for the info. I have an external audio device (Behringer 404 w/ Midas pre-amps, they say the Midas pre-amps are pretty good...).However, I'd hate to use the 48 Phantom Power because on my audio device then all inputs have that phantom power. That means that I cannot connect a dynamic mic and...

Re: No one should ever bother with bridging ALSA and JACK.
1. You can eliminate pops, crackles, clicks, and xruns in the bridge between ALSA and JACK. You can do so by replacing ALSA loopback with a dedicated USB soundcard. Plug SPDIF output of an onboard soundcard into SPDIF input of a USB soundcard. Route all system sounds to SPDIF out. Run zita-a2j on SP...

No one should ever bother with bridging ALSA and JACK.
Bridging ALSA and JACK without major backfiring effects like pops and xruns is enormously difficult and can take months of dedicated efforts. After months of dedicated efforts, I obtained the best result possible. But, even the perfect result possible from the bridge is worse than using ALSA alone. ...

Re: Switching off WiFi when there is no LAN
If you want a compact setup, adding a bulky WiFi router to a machine is suboptimal.
I'd rather
I'd rather
- choose a functional WiFi dongle that can be easily interrupted or uses DMA to bypass CPU
- use either CONFIG_RT_SCHED_GROUP or CONFIG_PREEMPT_RT_FULL.

Re: Switching off WiFi when there is no LAN
Can it withstand without xruns?
Code: Select all

The best way to bridge ALSA and JACK that I found.
For months, I went through lots of trials and errors in order to remove pops, crackles, and clicks from the bridge between ALSA and JACK. ALSA loopback caused a lot of pops, crackles, and clicks. It also produced soft xruns that were not reported by zita-ajbridge. Today, I think I found the way to e...
