Re: MUSIC DISTROS

Thanks JamesPeters and artofmusic. I read and researched a variety of distros related to music production. I decided to go for an Arch install. Their community is active and deep, and you learn more about the nuts and bolts of what you're doing, so it's not a distro for everybody. But I want to inst...

Re: MUSIC DISTROS

I have a hackintosh that I built and then re-built so I could dual boot with a linux distribution so I could (eventually) shift platforms. I ran Manjaro at first, because I liked the idea of a rolling distribution. But an additional wrinkle was that my audio interface is firewire-based, and I had tr...

Trouble registering AVLinux forum

I just wanted to know if anyone else has had trouble registering at the AVLinux forum. I tried for over an hour and had a tremendously frustrating time of it. I am sure I entered all info correctly and jumped thru all the annoying captcha hoops, but it errored out every time. There is no other way I...

Re: Focusrite Saffire Pro 40: Tips and tricks

empowerg or dufflespank, or anyone else for that matter. Would you be willing to describe or send some screenshots that show how you have ffado-mixer set up with a Saffire Pro ? I've been running a basic setup with my Saffire Pro 24DSP. But I don't understand the routing. Yesterday, I tried to under...

Re: Roland Rubix sound cards

I had looked at the Behringer UMC1820, but although the bang for the buck looks great, I was put off by a previous experience with poor QC on their part. I think if you get a good piece of equipment, Behringer is a great buy, you just may have to go thru a return or two to get it. I'm trying the Rub...

Re: Focusrite Saffire Pro 40: Tips and tricks

No, not boring at all!. Merci, basstrombone, for both suggestions. I have tried to optimize my machine for audio, that is, I've installed a low-latency kernel, set priorities in audio.conf, added myself to the audio group. Most of this from reading various how-to's and guides. But I've never gone th...

Re: ffado without ALSA

Hi @varpa, thanks, but I've tried that. I tried blacklisting by putting "blacklist snd_dice" in the file you mentioned. I also tried it in its own .conf file in /etc/modules.d. I also tried variations such as seeing what modules depend on snd-dice and blacklisting all of them. I put the bl...

ffado without ALSA

There have been a few tantalizing posts, both here and I think on the Mixbus Linux forums, about improving latency figures on some firewire interfaces by removing firewire support under ALSA that's built into recent kernel modules. My hardware interface is a Focusrite Saffie Pro 24 DSP. I'm running ...

Re: Best Practices fpr FireWire audio in mid-2018?

Hi matyas, I have only recently become active here, but I noticed your post because I have installed Ubuntu 18.04 with the KX repositories and I'm trying to tune my system to work with a firewire device. In my case, it's a Focusrite Saffire Pro 24 DSP. I was wondering what you've ended up doing. I c...

Re: Is the limitation me, or ffado support for my Saffire Pro 24 DSP?

I have a Saffire Pro24. I use AVLinux2018 which is well configured for pro audio work. The alsa firewire driver does not go lower than 256 frames/period. Could be done but alsa developer has not implemented it. Consequently, I always use ffado which I've gotten to go as low as 32 frames/period. One...

Re: Is the limitation me, or ffado support for my Saffire Pro 24 DSP?

Have you blacklisted snd-dice? I have tried this to no avail. Now, when I start up jack and select firewire as the driver, I do not see my device in the interface list. My only choice is "default" and jack won't start. Here are the crucial lines: 21:50:13.329 D-BUS: JACK server could not b...

Re: Is the limitation me, or ffado support for my Saffire Pro 24 DSP?

I agree with you about hardware monitoring, but for a variety of reasons, I prefer to avoid it. Money is one. Simplicity is another. And by simplicity, I mean a certain reserve when it comes to purchasing and maintaining additional hardware. Also, there's a kind of aspirational thing when it comes t...

Re: Is the limitation me, or ffado support for my Saffire Pro 24 DSP?

I don't think my Pro 24 DSP can do hardware monitoring. My frustration is still around being stuck at a buffer of 256 and best period of 2. I found a post by @dufflespank titled Focusrite Saffire Pro 40: Tips and tricks where they recommended steps to use "firewire" as the driver rather th...

Re: Focusrite Saffire Pro 40: Tips and tricks

I was hopeful that this would help me. I have a Saffire Pro 24 DSP. I blacklisted snd_dice for my kernel and tried using firewire as my driver in QjackCtl. But there must be some other issues related to my hardware. I got close. At one point, I thought I had it running, as JACK was able to start. Bu...
