Re: Releasing the "source code" of music
Lenny, you seem to misunderstand the context. Lyberta and I are aligned completely here and are *more* concerned about cultural freedom than RMS. RMS is not always right, he thinks it's fine for art to have ND non-free licenses, and he's wrong. Ok, fair enough - I don't all the views of RMS. But wh...

Re: Releasing the "source code" of music
RMS is always right. We need more people like him (and Lyberta here) - not less. People laugh at RMS, but it's exactly idealistic people like him who have made all this possible. I value them very high. We are heading towards world, where *everything* can (and will) be represented as information, so...

Re: Releasing the "source code" of music
Those that think that if someone else gets something, they must have lost something (the zero sum game people). Zero sum game may be true for baboons fighting over territory, because the roots and bananas and whatnot are sometimes limited. If we go full baboon with music, we should then knock the s...

Re: Releasing the "source code" of music
My thoughts on that might me due to me being a christian and not totally understandable to agnostics;) When God created the universe and other things - what kind of source code should he have released? No one would ever be able to understand it due to the fact that there are no other Gods;) I think...

Re: Releasing the "source code" of music
I'm still wondering how copyleft really works in music. Let's say I have a source file that describes how to create music with some music software, and I license that with copyleft. Let's make the example as simple as possible: 1. source: music.src 2. product: music.src -> MusicBOX -> music.wav Is i...

Re: Open source patent
Exactly. So the solution to OP's problem appears to be quite trivial: just make the invention publicly available. If it truly is novel, there should be no problem with this.Drumfix wrote:Any patentable idea that is published before anybody filed the idea as a patent is always regarded as prior art.

Re: Releasing the "source code" of music
I think the question for me is not about demanding everyone to release sources, that doesn't make any sense. But maybe most people would agree that it is a good thing if someone goes through all that trouble, and shares the work with sources. At least if the music is good

Re: Releasing the "source code" of music
There's no requirement that GPL software means releasing the source for output from that software. Inkscape illustrations don't need to be released under GPL. The GPL *can* be applied to music, and there's a one-directional compatibility between CC-BY-SA and GPL https://creativecommons.org/2015/10/...

Re: Releasing the "source code" of music
Too bad there is no "GPL for music" that demands release of the source code. I release recordings and source code under CC-BY-SA 4.0+ but it doesn't require disclosure of the source code. But what if my music is generated by a computer program and I license the source as GPL? Now if someo...

Re: Releasing the "source code" of music
This is very interesting and fundamental question. While playing around with SuperCollider, I got this feeling that not many people are sharing their works (I may be mistaken, and just didn't find the right corners of the interwebs...). This is one of the reasons why I more or less dropped it, I don...

Re: Your favourite music programming environment?
My quest for Perfect Music Programming Environment continues... After playing with SC, I decided I cannot stand the language. I can't get a grip of it. It's ugly, there's no "big picture" anywhere, I can't use it. I hate it, to be precise. After long and dark hacking hours with Common Musi...

Re: Your favourite music programming environment?
Damn.... I spent afternoon hacking CSound on my system. I'm so happy the Lisp FFI interface is crashing on me and the MIDI input didn't work right away... Too.. many... languages... :D You know why I stopped making music with HW synths? I was too obsessive with the devices, always tweaking, always j...

Thanks guys for the help! I eventually got it working, but didn't like it, so I'm not currently working with Extempore.

Re: Your favourite music programming environment?
In terms of sound quality I prefer Chuck. In terms of flexibility I prefer pure data. Wow, Chuck looks very interesting... and again new language :) In general, I find the sheer amount of choices a bit problematic. I try to stick to SC for now and not install and try out anything else unless I real...

May ask what language you prefer?davephillips wrote: Btw, my personal favorite is Csound but I have experience in SuperCollider, Pure Data, RTcmix, and other similar environments.
I'd also be extremely interested why you prefer Csound over SC.
